An Eggs-ellent Tour
Ever considered keeping your own chickens? When you raise your own eggs and meat, you know how the animal was treated and if its diet was jacked up on antibiotics. Get inspired at the fourth annual Chicken Coop Tour on June 11 and 12. Travel to a variety of experienced chicken keepers' backyards (some of which also have goats and ducks) and glean tips on rearing livestock. A few of the stops may even have homegrown fruits and vegetables for sale. A map and more details of the tour are posted on albuquerquecooptour.com.
Throw on a pair of shades and embrace the start of summer with a glass of wine under the sun. Throughout Memorial Day weekend, the Albuquerque Wine Festival returns to Balloon Fiesta Park with more than 27 New Mexico wineries, plus an array of food, art and live music. And there's no need to take your own glass for tasting, since one is provided with the $15 admission. (Bonus: Festival-goers under 21 are free with a parent or legal guardian.) Save some time and get your ticket in advance at abqwinefestival.com. If you're going to be in the southern part of the state, you won't have to miss out, either—Las Cruces is hosting a concurrent festival. Get advance tickets and details at snmwinefestival.com.
Raising a stink over TOMS shoes
So, I bought a pair of TOMS about three months ago, very enthused to be a supporter of the company's One for One campaign: For every pair you buy, another is given to a child in need. Pretty good deal, right? At around $55 for brand-new, high-design shoes, I thought so.
