The Austin four-piecewith Sammy Ragland on lead guitar and synth; Madelyn Carr on vocals, synth and guitar; Alex Salinas on drums; and Seth Tobin on bassplays music in the psychedelic/post rock/nu-gaze vein. The songs have a trance-like quality that could charm a snake. See it unfold at Burt's Tiki Lounge tonight beginning around 10 p.m. The Dry Season plays with locals The Glass Menageries and Mammoth Life. This 21-and-over show is free.

Science

Life as we know it

It’s alive! These famous lines of Dr. Frankenstein remind me of zombie movies and sci-fi horrors. But apparently the idea of creating life from death may be jumping from the pages of sci-fi novels into actual science.

According to the New York Times four years ago at the University of Massachusetts Medical School scientists created a molecule that could replicate and evolve by its self. It was nicknamed “The Immortal Molecule.”

This molecule may be only the beginning. Biologist and chemist in a lab in San Diego are trying to create life. They are attempting to bridge the gap between inanimate and animate using modern genetics. Perhaps Mary Shelly was on the right track, but only about two centuries too early. Read more about this here.

City of Albuquerque

City fines itself for water wasting

The other day I was fined for having water flowing from my yard into the street. Now, I'm not complainingwasting water is bad, especially since New Mexico is in an extreme drought. But guess who is wasting the most water ... not me, not your annoying neighbor who never fixes the sprinklers. No, it's the city.

According to KRQE, in the last year the City of Albuquerque has racked up a hefty fine of over $21,000 from the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Water Authority. Even more surprising than the fine is that the areas where the most water is wasted are not large city parks or grassy areas, but street medians. Wow Albuquerque, it may be time for some new sprinklers, don't you think?

Princess Beatrice (pictured right) and her famous tea rose hat

At first glance Princess Beatrice's tea rose hat looks like a Cindy Lou Who hairdo. Don't be fooled, this is no Dr. Seuss invention, but a design by Philip Treacy.

The extravagant hat worn by Princess Beatrice to the royal wedding between Prince William and Catherine Middleton, got almost as much attention as the wedding itself. The hat inspired mockery, admiration and even a Facebook page. Now Beatrice is giving up the head piece to help benefit children's charities. The bidding on eBay.com, which began this week, has now reached more than $35,000.

The auction is being overseen by Auction For A Cause and all proceeds will go to The The Little Bee Initiative, a campaign set up by Princess Beatrice. The money raised by auctioning off the hat will be split evenly between two charities, UNICEF and UK Children in Crisis.

For all of the prosperous fashionistas out there, there is still time to place your bid on this truly individual hat. The auction closes on May 22, so hurry.
