Don Yer Tartans: 25th Annual Rio Grande Valley Celtic Festival

Bagpipes, dancing, kilts and beyond. All things wonderful and beautiful and Celtic come together this weekend for the 25th Annual Rio Grande Valley Celtic Festival. This year's celebration serves honorably as the location for the 13th Annual Masters World Championship for Highland games. Events include stone, weight and hammer throws, caber and sheaf tosses and other traditional feats of strength. There will also be Men's Pro Division rugby, a Celtic Sevens Rugby Tournament and youth rugby games. For those whose interests bear slightly on the less-violent side, music, dancing, shopping, food and drink will abound throughout the park, as well as celtic dog, pony and horse shows, herding demonstrations and an antique car show. Kids' activities include knight fights, pony rides, a mini caber toss and more. Don't miss this chance to celebrate all seven Celtic nations packed into two days of fun. One-day admission ranges from $7-$15 with two-day admission discounts available. Balloon Fiesta Park • Sat May 18 • 9 am-5 pm • $7-$20 • ALL-AGES! • View on Alibi calendar

Two of New Mexico's Youth Volunteers are honored with a warm, sweaty handshake from Kevin Spacey.

On May 5th, two New Mexico students received awards for their volunteer services. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards gave Brianna Swinderman, from Rio Rancho, and Joseph Lee Estrada, from Velarde, titles as New Mexico's top youth volunteers for 2013 and as State Honorees.

A judging panel reviewed 5000 Local Honorees, and selected 102 to receive State Honorees titles. The panel chose these Honorees based on their personal growth, initiatives, impacts, and efforts.

State Honorees received $1000 dollars, silver medallions, and paid trips to Washington, D.C. for national recognition events. They also attended a gala awards ceremony at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, visited congressional representatives, and met the top youth volunteers from around the world.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognized ten of the State Honorees as National Honorees who received gold medallions, crystal trophies, additional $5000 awards, and $5000 grants, from The Prudential Foundation, that went to nonprofit, aid-giving organizations that the Honorees chose.

[Additional commentary from Nick Brown: What Sara failed to mention was that these teenagers got to shake hands with major Hollywood movie star Kevin Spacey. Spacey, you’ll notice from the photo, is even wearing a suit for the ceremony—it’s not like he just walked up there in a bathrobe and a bag of chips, demanding a $2,500 check. He took this thing seriously.

It reminds me of the time I got straight A’s in school; my parents were so pleased they hired Lee Majors to come to our house and congratulate me in person. Of course that never happened, and I never got straight A’s, either, but the story puts some perspective on how these kids must have felt shaking hands with Kevin Spacey. Spacey also recently photobombed a woman in Boston.]

Synchro proffers Dairyland dark wave sweets tonight

        Dairyland dark wave

Everyone needs to get out of the house—no, work doesn't count—every now and again. I personally plan to do some R&R creepin' at Synchro Studio (512-B Yale SE) this evening. What could lure a dyed-in-the-wool recluse like me out and about? Samantha Glass. I've been a fan of Madison, Wis.-based synth hunk Beau Devereaux's work for a month of Sundays, and tonight he brings Burque "synthetic melodies remind[ing] one that moonlight can illuminate space in as striking a manner as any old mass of incandescent gas." Devereaux is touring with stellar Milwaukeean one-woman minimal synth/cold wave act Stacian. Highway dream-pop duo Dripping Rainbow and the inimitable Alan George Ledergerber rep our enchanted local scene. Peep related A/V below. Get Your Schwervon: Hoverboard • Schwervon! • The Blackout Disciples • Get Action

Blackbird Buvette serves up an inaugural springtime rock and roll bash on its tiny back porch. It’s pretty cramped, but it’s as close to a DIY basement show as you can get … while having drinks served. This show is a who’s-who of the best garage rockers still standing (no overdoses or wheelchairs). Drum legend Joe Bolt debuts The Blackout Disciples' dark and dirty rock sans evil posturing. Other Dirty Novels alums—Dandee Fleming and Brian Keith—and Demarcus Sumter (St. Petersburg), Billy Miles Brooke (Pan!c) and Ben Woods (Porter Draw) make up the group. Punk and roll outfit Get Action (formerly Riley Switch) features bad boy Bill Bunting (Ten Seconds to Liftoff), Scott Brown (Song Thing) and Ashley Floyd and Jeff Jones (both ex-Gracchi). Newcomers Hoverbourd tag themselves as surf-indie-dance-rock, and that works for me, especially with a horn thrown into the mix. Despite bountiful local talent, I’m most excited about Schwervon! from Shawnee, Kan., by way of New York City. Now in their 13th year, guitarist Major Matt Mason and drummer Nan Turner’s music ranges from sweet jangle-pop to ear-shattering racket. Keep a few bucks stashed in your wallet to score Schwervon! merch, including the brilliant, new Courage and '09’s sweet and lilting Low Blow. The Daily Word in high flying, Benghazi Benghazi Benghazi, and goats riding horses

              The Daily Word

Summer is here and it's time to jump in the water. Free swim lessons for low-income kids!

Unlicensed pilot busted at Double Eagle for flying too high. Or something. I'm not sure how to make this joke actually. He had a plane full of pot, is what I'm trying to say.

Under Susana Martinez, the New Mexico Environment Department isn't so worried about New Mexico's environment. Here's one more example.

Another U.S. Army official whose job is to stop sexual assault has been charged with sexual assault.

The media doesn't think the Obama administration's assault on civil liberties is so minor when it's happening to them.

Maybe those Benghazi emails were doctored?

And finally, visit Newfoundland. Because of this goat riding on a horse.

                dreams

Rowdy’s Dream Blog #294: I’m waiting for a bullet in the back of my head.

I sit in a plush chair. I am wearing a black neoprene glove. I retract the blade from a pistol-shaped utility knife. I hear the boss' son approaching me from behind. I hear the boss' order and wait for a bullet in the back of my head. I slump down in the chair and scream, twice, still waiting.
