This is from Farm & Table ...
Local fig wood cold-smoked and seared scallops with bacon Brussels sprouts over white bean puree. Served with balsamic "caviar" created with 12 year aged balsamic vinegar and an apple foam. Beautiful...but even more delectable.
Pedag Washable Cotton Terry Insole
Hopefully the poor kids are wearing socks ... though the pictures say otherwise.
I need an injection of Calexico to vaccinate me against a looming cliché. Musically, I tend towards country. No matter the brown of my skin or the accent of my voice, when I open my mouth to sing a twang is what you’ll hear. I play upright bass and my desire to play metal is always swept under the country rug when I and a group of musicians converge.
My guitar player and lead singer has been known to have a plastic bottle of vodka in hand from morning to night, but for the next year he sleeps on a prison cot, with no guitar to strum. The train track is my next door neighbor who whistles me to sleep. My momma’s tears haven’t gotten me back to church on Sunday. My dog, who is chasing around death like it’s attached to her tail, killed the rooster and now I sleep away the day.
Please give me a ticket to see Calexico so that I may learn some balance of influences. Calexico shoots up a train track with mariachi trumpets and drapes a banjo twang in sultry French lyrics. I lay in the bed of a pickup truck with a PBR in my hand wishing to see Calexico and steal myself some varied influence.
Christie, your article was great, interesting and thought-provoking. I mean no offense here ... but ... I think this experiment of yours could have been done a lot better. First of all, if the locavore was not vegetarian they would have been fine. Second, a vegetarian who doesn't like tomotoes and can't cook beans? Well, you really did have your work cut out for you. Yes, as you mentioned, it takes a lot of planning. With planning, freezing, stocking, you could have eaten a lot better, as I'm sure a true locavore would. Finally, what happened? You said you found flour on day 5. Your last two days should have been filled with tortillas, bread, cakes, cookies. Though who am I to talk ... I'm lazy and therefore really bad at the keep it local thing. oh just realized things like baking powder and yeast would have held back the use of the flour. Damn.
