I've met Laura on several occasions and I agree with you. The problem is she really wasn't very clear on how they votes are tallied and has not responded to all concerns (The excuse part was really directed at someone else at the offices). She closed with asking if it answered the question and the responses have indicated that it hasn't. I'd like to see a break down of the votes. I understand that there may be reasoning for not having it in print. However, there's ample place to put it online, and there's no reason why a full disclosure of the results cannot be posted with an "as is" disclaimer. I'd just like to see the actual numbers or be provided with the metric used that gives 400 way ties.
Actually, I should respond just for full disclosure. I did win in two categories (Best Trivia Night & Best Kent), so I'm not really bitching about not winning. I'm bitching about about a sense of integrity that the Alibi has claimed to have, but may not. That is of course, unless we get a full explanation without excuses as to why categories on the ballot were not included. So you're trying to tell us there there simply just wasn't enough of a response to include the "Best Weekly or Monthly Bar Event"? I find it hard to believe you got a big enough response from Best Accountant and not for a Bar Event. A weekly's Best Of issue should be the highlight issue of the year, not a place for shout outs to your friends. You had categories on the ballot, they should be somewhere. You have a website, with unlimited storage, so why not post the full results? When you have articles with more info than can be printed they go on here, so why not the actual results? Talking about 83 way ties is a thinly veiled lie for not having an excuse to answer the questions given to you. If you only printd the exact results, you're saying that there are several categories in which there were A)Over a dozen things voted for in a category and B)they all received the EXACT number of votes? I just can't believe that you'd get exactly the same number of votes over two or three times on a plethora of categories. How about showing us some numbers and proving me wrong? Or better yet how about having an independent organization tally your votes for next year. It's bound to be less stressful for all you, gives the system some integrity and it's less likely for me and others to consider it just as an important measure of who is accomplished in town as the faces in Albuquerque The Magazine.
I don't mean to knock the Golden West or the good times and memories anyone has at that place. However, I just cannot believe the audacity of Kathy Zimmer. Here are my points of contention on it: Mrs. Zimmer's building was built by her grandfather and is outright owned by her. Assuming it's been in the family the whole time (I do not know if this is the case), there should be little to no payments on the building itself (outside of licenses and insurance). The building is a historic landmark, officially or not, to Albuquerque. Kathy Zimmer, reported to news crews on the scene of the fire the same story: In addition to not being made aware of the fire until seeing it on TV, while it was still burning she had mentioned that without "community support" it would become a parking lot. She has since mentioned the "parking lot" scenario several times. Officials were alerted to the fire after Jeff Anderson, Launchpad owner's security company alerted him. He has been called out by Mrs. Zimmer in the days since as the ultimate cause of the fire, due to his rowdy and inconsiderate patrons. This is what I put together and my rational for my reluctance to not trust Mrs. Zimmer. Why is it that this building, family owned and historic, had no a)fire/security system and b)insurance? Why was Mrs. Zimmer so incredibly quick to play on the sympathies of 'burque's community (who have a deep love of everything "historic")? There are other questions too - How can buildings such as the Golden West and El Ray, which, although not with frequency, are filled with people not have proper fire safety systems (at least an alarm)? Additionally, why not be up front about the insurance, which if had would most certainly cover this catastrophe? Today's Daily Lobo has more from Zimmer. According to her, the fire was started by the combustion of oily rags left out - to me, that's gross negligence. And again, in the Lobo interview we hear cries about it being a parking lot without "community support." She mentions the architectural aesthetic uniqueness of the building, a repeated phrase since the first on scene interview and meant to pull at the strings of the hearts of Burquenos everywhere. I don't mean to be a conspiracy theorist or to deride anyone of their love for the Golden West. As a community member and informed citizen, I demand to know the whole story. As such, I encourage you to, though this may seem drastic and mean, to boycott any "community support" to Zimmer until we are told the details of her fire safety systems at the building and a history of the insurance. Kathy Zimmer might be crying woe is me because she is or isn't at least partially responsible for the fate of her building. But until she's clear and upfront with the community, I see no reason for us to blindly trust her when, to my eyes, the whole situation has the stench of lies and deceit. Re: Wimpy’s review
I eat at Wimpys about once a week. The owner remembers me every time, but still reminds me that satisfaction is guaranteed. They mean it, too. Everyone who works there will ask you it, and they'll find out why your not satisfied, which, I doubt has ever happened. If you're a red chili person, I do recommend the frito pie (the only thing they have that's not fries or burger). Do yourself a favor and go and ask Gene why you should eat there. He'll tell you his lifelong love affair with the burger, and then you'll taste it in his food. And, be sure to turn up 15th from Lomas so you can see the building come into view when driving to it. It's like a beacon of burger with a sign around the building that just repeats the mantra "BURGERS." |
