Still Life in Albuquerque

The Alibi's 2006 Photography Contest

Grand Prize Winner

"Drag Night at the Albuquerque Social Club"

Russell Maynor snapped this beautiful, if somewhat otherworldly, picture of local drag superstar "Cheyenne Pretty" performing in front of her adoring fans. It’s as if the searing sound of Pretty’s voice were so powerful it shifted the entire room into another dimension. For his creation, Maynor will receive a $50 gift certificate to Camera & Darkroom along with $60 to The District and four passes to the Guild.

I can't tell you how glad I am that we dispensed with categories this year. Who needs 'em, really? I enjoyed the free-for-all, mainly because contestants reveled in it, sending us an astonishing range of images of everything from Mama Nature to graffiti to eggs to smashed cars to drag queens to naked bodies (please send more of the latter next year).

The contest, of course, wouldn't be the same without the generosity of our sponsors. Get all your photographic gear and expert advice at Nob Hill's Camera & Darkroom (3225 Central NE, 255-1133), which also has two locations in Santa Fe. Get yummy Downtown eats and drinks at Ralli's (243-1093) and The District (243-0003), both located just north of Central on the Fourth Street Mall. And get your fix of the best and smartest films showing in the city at the Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE, 255-1848).

I'd also like to thank the judges. This year's panel included Christie Chisholm, Laura Marrich, Devin O'Leary, Marisa Demarco, Tom Nayder and myself. It was one big ol' hunk o' fun from start to finish. (If only our jobs were always so enjoyable.)

Last but not least, congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who participated. Winners can call me at 346-0660 ext. 251 to arrange to pick up their prizes.

"Graffiti, South Valley, Albuquerque”

Kevin Kirk ’s image reminded us of surfboards stuck vertically in the sand. Kirk wins $20 to The District.

"Beautiful Trash”

Aaron Marie Beien took advantage of this unintentional sculpture at an Albuquerque junkyard for this striking black and white composition mounted on fiber board. Beien wins two passes to the Guild.

Two of our lady judges loved this disturbing portrait by Jesse Pearson . To the rest of us, it just looked like a naked guy on a dirty mattress. Pearson still wins two passes to the Guild.

"Catie’s Eggs"

Erica Snider tells us she purchased these eggs at La Montañita Co-op on Central. Omelet, anyone? Snider wins $20 to Ralli’s.

Michel Romero snapped this freaky photo and edited it with help from Chris Wagner. Romero tells us he was inspired by Frank Miller’s Sin City comic book. Romero wins two passes to the Guild.

"Ice on Rocks Near River”

Dylan Goyer ’s Zen-ish title says it all. Goyer wins two passes to the Guild.

"Revelations in a Dry River Bed—Abiquiu"

I think we had a cracked dirt photo among last year’s honorable mentions as well. We all loved the texture and hues in Kevin L. Padilla ’s stark, archetypal New Mexican image. Padilla wins two passes to the Guild.

“Sati the Cat Being”

Leila McFadden tells us her cat Sati is often confused for "an alien entity from ‘Jupi-tor,’ or a gargoyle, or perhaps even a large mutated sewer rat." (Grandpa, is that you?) McFadden wins a $20 gift certificate to Ralli’s.

Both these images were taken at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church here in Albuquerque by Javid Kamali , a photographer who’s new in town and wanted to do his small part to honor our city’s 300 th birthday. Kamali wins a $20 gift certificate to Ralli’s and two passes to the Guild.

On the Cover "Windmills"

Elliot Madriss took this week’s stunning cover photo at ¡Traditions! in Algodones. You can see more of his work at Madriss wins two passes to the Guild.

"One Less Car"

Jerry Hazard tells us this fish-eyed photo was shot on the west side of Four Hills, just outside an area of suburban expansion. For his efforts, Hazard will receive $20 to Ralli’s and two tickets to the Guild.
