Lovable Canadian weirdo Guy Maddin (The Saddest Music in the World, Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary, Tales from the Gimli Hospital) takes the classic gangster genre on a dreamlike trip into his id-filled brain. Jason Patric (The Lost Boys, Rush) stars as a murderous gangster who ... yeah, it's kinda hard to say. There's a creepy old house, a few ghosts, some possible references to Homer's Odyssey, a lot of Freudian psychology and an appearance by Isabella Rossellini. A bit like Hugo and The Artist, this one's a fairly heavy rumination of the cinema of nostalgia. As always, Maddin's work remains gorgeous, puckish and highly enigmatic. 94 minutes R.
