Bill W.
Alcoholic Anonymous cofounder Bill Wilson got excellent biopic treatment courtesy of James Woods in an award-winning 1989 TV movie. Here, documentary filmmakers Kevin Hanlon and Dan Carracino dig even deeper into Wilson's troubling alcoholism, his spiritual conversion and his creation of the famed 12-step program. Dramatic reenactments help flesh out the newsreel footage, exposing Wilson's darker moments for all to see. (He briefly considered LSD a possible cure for alcoholism!) Old audio of Bill himself provides most of the narration, but it's a surprisingly balanced portrait of the often-conflicted crusader.
