I Wish

In this sensitive, delicate, casually realistic drama from Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda (Still Walking, After Life), a 12-year-old boy is separated from his beloved brother by his parents' divorce. (The two are played magnificently by real-life brothers Koki and Ohshirô Maeda.) Now living in suburban Japan, our young hero finds out that a bullet train will soon be built in the area. Filled with childhood hope, he firmly believes the arrival of this technological miracle will signal the magical reunion of his family. Like a simpler, more realistic version of Stand By Me, I Wish finds wisdom and humor in the wishful thinking of childhood schemes and adventures. In Japanese with English subtitles. 128 minutes PG.
