“I Get In Where I Fit In”

Promoter, producer, emcee, DJ, graf-artist, skateboarder, business-owner, punk rock frontman—Speed One fits a lot of places

Speed One is not bitter.

Sure, he's part of Albuquerque's early gen hip-hop, among the first in the 505 to record original material and promote local shows.

Sure, he was a member of Small Town Desert Funk Mob in ’96 alongside the now-famous Xzibit, who lived with Speed as the two finished their trek through Cibola High School. And though Xzibit dropped the "A" from his handle (it stands for Alvin) just like he dropped Albuquerque, Speed wishes him the best. "I'm content with what I'm doing," he says. "I get in where I fit in."

New Year's Ain't for Babies

A quick reference guide to an all-ages New Year

New Year's isn't so much fun when you’re under 21, what with all the hype around drinking to excess as one last hurrah for the passing year. But, honestly, the younger crowd has it easier in some ways: no need for designated drivers, no waking up next to a stranger or forgetting the events of the previous night. Take advantage of your freedom from alcohol-induced stupidity and enjoy a musically stimulating all-ages New Year. Here are a few places around town open to all for the dawn of 2007.

Ticket Blaster is a friendly alternative to online ticketing giants

Albuquerque started seeing the tag on the Launchpad's calendar about three years ago. Working primarily with independent promoters, the advance ticketing service gets props for donating 10 percent of its profits to charities in the communities where the tickets are being sold. In Burque's case, that's Roadrunner Food Bank.

Sonic Reducer

The Spirit Girls Forever Free · Fantasia Fantasia · Mr. Gnome Mr. Gnome

If angry porcelain dolls made art rock, this is what it would sound like, though such a narrow label does this disc little justice. Lush with archetypal symbolism (ships, nests, bears, Ophelia), the chanted words yank your dream head from its murky depths. Don't listen to The Spirit Girls while operating heavy machinery--not unless you're using it to construct a life-sized dollhouse for your ghostly interior self, the one who's right at home with these pale, ethereal rock moppets. Be prepared to drift through long beds of soundscape with cellos, excessive panning and mostly tasteful vintage effects. Though not inaccessible, this album won't work for you if you're looking for something opaque, solid and tangible—in a word, easy.

Danksgiving 2015 • Mondo Vibrations • Dre Z • Pocket Full Of Dub

Work up some post-Thanksgiving munchies or dance off your food guilt this week at Danksgiving 2015. Also on deck for the night will be the chill melodies of Dre Z, the stylings of Burque Sol and Pocket Full of Dub, to boot. EVENT HORIZON (Tuesday, Dec 1)

Bloodsuckers Licking Your Ears

Vampires Everywhere! • rock • Consider Me Dead • Set to Stun

Metalcore masters Vampires Everywhere! will be rising from their decrepit coffins for a gig at The Co-Op on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The project of Michael Orlando, VE! are proponents of a sick sound that craftily combines aspects of goth, industrial and horror punk into a smotheringly propulsive sonic experience that can be freaky and frightening or acutely alluring depending on the internal chemical composition of each of their millions of stunned listeners. Check out the video for “Drug of Choice” for further evidence of the outfit's crepuscular commitments. Arizona electro-popsters Consider Me Dead and “post-sci-fi hardcore” trio Set To Stun (from El Lay of course) open. This all ages show at an alcohol- and drug-free venue costs $13 and begins at 6pm.
