The Roost

A home for new and unorthodox music feathers its nest

Head–improv–head

Verse/chorus–verse/chorus–bridge–verse/chorus

A–B–A

These are some of the “normal” ways of getting music done. But for adventurous musicians, such everyday forms—even everyday instruments—don’t always serve their artistic impulses. Portugal. The Man The Satanic Satanist · RX Bandits Mandala · Solid Ghost Disconcerto No. 1

Portugal. The Man's fourth album in as many years was recorded in a week and a half. The Wasilla, Alaska foursome clearly thrives on brevity: The Satanic Satanist is richly textured, finely tuned and gorgeously orchestrated. There's a certain cosmic-carnival taste you can lick off the spiraling guitars, and nearly every song flows into the next, making the record seem like a continuous psychedelic jam. (That shouldn't surprise anyone who picks up the CD, since the cover art is nothing if not trippy.) Portugal. The Man continues to streamline its sound without telegraphing its next move. (SM)

Searching for Something

¡Mayday! • Demrick • DJ Stigmata • Septicemia Records • rap, hip-hop

I’m not sure that the concept of “genre” is really relevant anymore in the realm of music. The days of “pure” music are long gone, and while this might leave some “old-heads” grumbling over message boards about the loss of “real rap” or “real jazz,” I think that for the most part this is a good thing. The possibilities are more abundant than ever before as artists dip their fingers in any number of genres and traditions. ¡MAYDAY! is one group embracing this diversity in their quest for success…
