Culture Shock

Director Preston Mendenhall has brought one of sweet William Shakespeare's last and most obscure plays to the Adobe Theatre. Cymbeline mixes comedy, tragedy and romance into a fairytale-like story about a princess who marries a young man of whom her father, Cymbeline, does not approve. This act of disobedience sets in motion an intricate series of schemes, intrigues, battles and betrayals. Everyone except the villains live happily ever after. Cymbeline runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. Sundays at 2 p.m. $12 general, $10 students/seniors. 898-9222.

Graduate students from UNM's Department of Theatre and Dance will present a show of dance performances at the Rodey Theatre. The show will be created and performed by UNM dance students. Flying Low opens this weekend with performances on Friday, Feb. 18, and Saturday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. In addition to student pieces by Angi Campbell, Lauren Figg, Blythe Kanis, Jeanne Snodgrass, Michele Torino and Sarah Waff, the show will include the United States premiere of Maratooni, a highly praised contemporary dance piece created in Finland by American choreographer Jonathan Kane in collaboration with Finnish composer Mikko Vaarala. Tickets are $12 general, $8 seniors, $6 students. For reservations, call 925-5858.

This Sunday, Feb. 20, from 3 to 5 p.m., Bookworks (4022 Rio Grande NW) hosts its annual Local Author Book Fair. Here's a partial lineup of the authors who plan to attend: Don Alberts (Battle of Glorieta), Eleni Bastea (Memory and Architecture), Don Bullis (99 New Mexicans and a Few Other Folks), Ben Daitz (Delivery), Martha Egan (Clearing Customs), Jim Hammond (The Phoenix Society), Sharon Neiderman (Return to Abo: A Novel of the Southwest), Peri Pakroo (The Small Business Start Up Kit), David Ryan (Free and Easy: How to Create Your Own Adventure by Living on the Road), Michael Thomas (Ostrich), Robert J. Torrez (UFOs over Galisteo and Other Stories of New Mexico's History), Mera Wolf (Mayday). For details, call 344-8139.
