A Shadow of Our Former Elves—Santa's elves have had enough with slave wages and lousy working conditions. They'll be letting off a little steam in a late-night Christmas variety show beginning this weekend at Sol Arts (712 Central SE). With live music, flicks from Basement Films and surprises around every corner, A Shadow of Our Former Elves should be a welcome alternative to the staid conventions of more typical holiday entertainments. Fridays and Saturdays at 9:45 p.m. through Dec. 17. $5. Proceeds to benefit United Elf Workers of the World, Northern Branch. 710-7724.
Yuletide Opera—The Santa Fe Opera's ever popular holiday concert, Arias, Carols and Songs, comes to UNM's Alumni Chapel on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. The show will feature performances by three exceptional young singers—soprano Jennifer Black, tenor Michael Fabiano and baritone Corey McKern—belting out opera selections and sacred works along with holiday songs and carols. The concert is free with seating available on a first come first served basis.
Carmina Burana—It would be hard to find a less Christmasy piece of music than Carl Orff's famous Carmina Burana. All the more reason to swing by Popejoy Hall on Thursday, Dec. 8, to catch a rendering of this dark, drunken masterwork performed by the University Chorus under the direction of conductor Jorge Perez-Gomez. The chorus will be accompanied by the UNM Concert Choir and the UNM Symphony Orchestra along with soprano Jennie Olson, soprano Sam Shepperson and baritone Nathan Krueger. Tickets are a steal at $10, $8 and $6. For more information, call 277-5915.
Circus Luminous—Wise Fool is a nonprofit theater and arts organization created and staffed entirely by women. One of their projects, Circus Luminous, will bring 10 astonishing acts to UNM's Rodey Theatre this Saturday, Dec. 10. The show gives traditional circus routines a contemporary twist, with music by Bing, choreographed and danced by Moving People Dance Theatre. There's a matinee at 2 p.m. and an evening performance at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and $15 (half price for kids 12 and under). Acquire yours by calling 925-5858 or by stopping by the UNM Bookstore ticket office.
