Culture Shock

Write Side Up—You'd better rent yourself a cabin in the woods and finish off that masterpiece you keep telling everyone about. It's time once again for SouthWest Writers' annual writing contest. This year, they're offering 19 different categories, including a new one for work written in Spanish. The competition is open to anyone and everyone. All you need is a pulse, along with a deep-rooted lust for literary glory.

The first-, second- and third-place winners in each category will receive cash prizes. First-place winners automatically get entered into a competition for the yearly $1,000 Storyteller Award. Who Died and Made You Rock 'n' Roll?—An exhibit featuring acrylic and ink pop art pieces by Stef Thirteen opens up this week at the Yale Art Center (1001 Yale SE). Go for the title alone, and the snacks, which will be served at the opening reception on Friday, Feb. 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. The show runs through Feb. 14. For details, call 242-1669.

Cinco—The KiMo Theatre's little gallery space celebrates Burque's 300th birthday with an exhibit featuring work by five excellent Hispanic artists—Sylvia Ortiz Domney, Jorge Fernandez, Ricardo Chavez-Mendez, Art Moyano and Reynaldo "Sonny" Rivera.
