Double Think—Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could leave 1984 in the past where it belongs? George Orwell's ever-timely novel gets the stage treatment this week when the Actor's Gang brings it to UNM's Popejoy Hall. War as peace? Ignorance as strength? Hey, some things never go out of style. The production occurs Tuesday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. The show contains partial nudity and strong language. You can purchase tickets by calling 925-5858.
Poetry and Flowers—516 Arts gets a jump on poetry month (that's coming in April, in case it slipped your mind) with a reading cosponsored by UNM's graduate creative writing program. Taking the mic will be Acoma Pueblo writer Sara Marie Ortiz, local poetry fixture Mitch Rayes, and two UNM graduate writing students, Chris Boat and Allen C. Jones. Stop by the art space at 516 Central SW on Friday, March 23, at 8 p.m. for the free event, which doubles as a closing reception for Mapping Bodies: The Art and Artifice of Science and Eye to I: Self Portraits by Women Artists, both of which come down the following day. For details, call 242-1445 or go to www.516arts.org.
Turcos and Dancing Bears—Former New Mexico State Librarian Orlando Romero will deliver a free lecture this weekend on the gypsies of early New Mexico at the Santuario de Guadalupe. Part of El Rancho de las Golondrinas' 2007 Speaking of Traditions series, the lecture will explore the influence of gypsies on Spanish colonial culture. For details, call 471-2261.
Calling All Thesps—Whether you're a guy or a doll, you might want to consider showing up at the Albuquerque Little Theatre this weekend, when director Robb Anthony Sisneros will conduct auditions for his new production of Guys and Dolls. You should bring clearly marked sheet music, because an accompanist will be provided for your vocal audition. The trials will be held this Saturday, March 24, and Sunday, March 25. Additional callbacks will be held on Monday, March 26. The production opens in mid May. To sign up for an audition, call 242-4750 Monday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m.
