Culture Shock: Saving Tongues Saving Tongues

The Voices of the Earth Threatened Languages Poetry Reading is back for its fifth year this Sunday, Jan. 10, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Harwood Art Center (1114 Seventh NW). The reading features performances of poetry, song and storytelling in languages perilously close to extinction, such as Cherokee, Scottish Gaelic, Sesotho, Okinawan, Navajo and Nahuatl. LeRoy Sealy, a Choctaw storyteller, and Comanche dramatist Terry Gomez will perform along with many others. Donations are requested. Culture Shock: A Woman’s Place Is On The Stage A Woman’s Place Is On The Stage

From Jan. 8 through 31, The Vortex (2004 1/2 Central SE) hosts the national playwriting festival Womensworx . Eight 10-minute plays by female writers will be staged by female directors and compete for awards for best play and audience favorite, though the spirit is less one of competition and more one of collaboration. One of the plays is by Albuquerque’s own Kate Horsley, CNM instructor and author of Confessions of a Pagan Nun . Catch Womensworx Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15, with a preview on Thursday, Jan. 7, at 8 p.m. for $7. Purchase tickets at vortexabq.org or cal 247-8600.
