Old Town is back with another round of Cultural Sunsets summer programming, which brings culturally edifying entertainment to the plaza most Thursdays through early October. Featuring colorful costumes, elaborate and often ancient choreography, and groups that are committed to fostering traditions, Cultural Sunsets gives patrons a chance to experience customs that are likely new to them. This Thursday, May 26, you can see performances from the New Mexico branch of Miyagi Ryu Nosho Kai school of Okinawan cultural dance and music. The kids can learn to make Japanese paper dolls too, in a “make and take” workshop. This free event is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Keep tabs on upcoming Cultural Sunsets by calling 311.
How I Lost My Virginity
Yeah right, like I'd tell you that. This is about a new one-woman show at The Box Performance Space (114 Gold SW). How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Lost My Virginity is an autobiographical show written and performed by Aileen Clark, a comedy that sports the tagline “one woman, three languages, 21 characters and a fist fight.” Clark shares anecdotes and advice, like what it's like to be the “whitest Latinita on the planet,” or why you shouldn't fall in love with men who remind you of your father. The show is recommended for theatergoers at least 16 years old, so hopefully it's a little racy. This one-night-only affair is on Friday, May 27, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 at theboxabq.com.
Since the theme of this issue is superheroes, I thought I'd give a little teaser for an article that's coming up in next week's Alibi. It has something to do with superheroes, comic books, spirituality and famous authors. The piece will include an interview with an exciting personality or two. Until next week, start harnessing your power to change the world.
