Even though she won the coveted Booker Prize for fiction with 1997's The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy has since pointed her sharp, supple pen in the direction of topics all too factual. The Indian author has built up a well-deserved reputation for her incisive, elegant essays on world affairs. Her opinions are largely typical left-wing fare, from her strenuous objections to corporate hegemony and U.S. foreign policy to her support for activism in the cause of environmental protection and social justice. Yet if War Talk, her third collection of essays, is anything like her other writings, this book will once again express Roy's deepest political convictions in poetic but straightforward language that's a joy to read.
