Ian van Coller's mixed media photographic work definitely caught my attention at a recent photography show at 516 Magnífico Artspace. His work comments on his experiences growing up as a white boy in apartheid-era South Africa, mixing European and indigenous African aesthetics into some truly amazing pieces. If you didn't catch his work at Magnífico, you can redeem yourself by stopping by his MFA show at UNM's John Sommers Gallery. The exhibit opens this Friday, Sept. 5, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Show up an hour early and you can catch a gallery talk with van Coller. The show runs through Sept. 8. 277-5861.
