Frausto moved to Albuquerque from Austin, Texas, in the late '80s, and he's been chillin' in the South Valley ever since. A talented painter of South Valley scenes, Frausto is also famous for creating T-shirts with social and political themes. He hopes to make Corkfest 2004 a worthy successor to folk artist Steve White's popular Yardfest. White, as you may recall from a Culture Shock column a couple weeks ago, is moving to Georgia next month.
As with White's event, Corkfest 2004 will be a friendly, laid-back affair open to all. Frausto is hosting the festival at his large, glamorous South Valley hacienda, providing plenty of space for dozens of local artists to sell their wares and for a handful of local bands to annoy the neighbors.
Among the artists featured at the event will be Kenny Chavez, Jeff Sipe, Goldy Garcia, Robert Brettelle, Chris Grinnell, Skot Jonz, Rudy Mondragon, Mark Garcia, White, Frausto and plenty more. Music will be provided by Selsun Blue, Daddy Long Loin, Jeff Sipe and Tom Bodean, and other bands. Frausto also plans to host the first annual South Valley Olympics, which will involve games of horseshoes and “wheelo” along with a tamale-eating contest.
The antics begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, and continue 'til 7 p.m. or so. To get to Corky's pad, take the César Chávez exit off I-25. Head west until César Chávez turns into Bridge. After crossing the river take the first left onto La Vega. Drive until you get to the T, then take a left. Corky's place is the fifth driveway on the left at 1024A La Vega SW. It should be well-marked, and there will be plenty of parking on the street.
