Culture Shock

By Steven Robert Allen

I'm a pig man myself. By that, I don't mean I'm half-pig, half-man—despite what a couple bitter ex-girlfriends might tell you. All I mean is that I'm partial to pigs. I like them. I feel an affinity for them, so to speak.

Cooling Off

Circles, Stripes and Checks at Galerie E

By Steven Robert Allen

Throughout the late '60s and '70s, Rini Price regularly exhibited her art. In 1979, however, she underwent a difficult operation for cancer, an experience that dramatically changed her attitude toward her work. Although her cancer hasn't recurred since 1984, Price has rarely exhibited over the last two decades, content to create her art outside the public eye.

Albuquerque Contemporary 2004

Albuquerque Museum

By Steven Robert Allen

One of our city's most anticipated art events is always Magnífico's annual juried exhibit of Albuquerque area artists. This year, Gronk, the nationally acclaimed Los Angeles performance and visual artist, did the jurying, so there's a good chance the show will be even more radical than it's been in years past. I'm excited, and you should be too. Albuquerque Contemporary 2004 opens Saturday, July 24, with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Albuquerque Museum. The show runs through Sept. 5. 243-7255.

How Not to Fight the War on Terror

Review by Steven Robert Allen

Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror

Let's set aside, just for a moment, all the blustery politics that have swirled like a tornado around this book for the past several months. Against All Enemies opens on the morning of September 11, 2001, when Richard Clarke first learns that a plane has slammed into one of the World Trade Center towers in downtown Manhattan. As President Bush's former National Coordinator on Terrorism, Clarke offers a true insider's view of 9-11 like almost no one else can. This first chapter might be the single most fascinating account I've yet read of that horrible day. Even the barrage of ludicrous bureaucratic acronyms doesn't detract from its raw power.

Garden of Beasts: A Novel of Berlin 1936

Deaver's new thriller follows an ex-mafia killer assigned by the U.S. government to assassinate one of Hitler's top thugs. According to preliminary reviews, Garden of Beasts paints a convincingly chilly portrait of a paranoic Berlin on the brink of full-on Nazi insanity.
