The focus at Nexus is on balanced, drinkable beers that don’t smash customers in the mouth by a hop assault. That being said, Nexus beat out stalwart area breweries at the 2011 NM IPA Challenge. There are nine styles featured on tap, including standouts IPA, ESB, cream and Belgian white. The brewery is attracting quite a following, both for the beer and as a “New Mexican soul food” gastropub. The menu offers specialties of Southern-fried po’boys and the delicious marriage of chicken and waffles. It’s just the place to take your corn-bread-and-Frito-pie-craving friends while still getting your craft beer fix. And there’s live music, too. Nexus has bands booked several nights a week. Il Vicino’s thin-crusted, gourmet-topped pizzas are perennial favorites among Alibi readers, but the big salads are equally popular. Order at the register, and a server brings the food to your table, making weekday lunches speedy. The open kitchen gives you something to stare at while you wait. Stop in for a quick lunch or a late afternoon microbrew at one of the sidewalk tables.

3.74 rating (45 votes)
A bar you can smoke in! Imbibe is an über-trendy cigar lounge with backlit smoke-tendril art and contemporary seating. There are hordes of annoying knockoff-clad barflies as far as the eye can see, but the humidor is well-stocked and well-attended by knowledgeable staff, and there’s a rooftop deck (if you can make it up there; there’s always a line). Get there early for the best seats. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

2.56 rating (104 votes)
Besides the late-night menus and 20-odd house-brewed beers, Kelly's has an enormous, dog-friendly patio that somehow manages to be packed to the elbows, lively and laid-back all at the same time. The food is decidedly geared toward the bar crowd, with shades of cow, ostrich, turkey, buffalo or veggie on the burger menu. Get one with a side of sweet potato fries. With sometimes too-loud live music and a party-hard crowd, it’s usually best to avoid this place on the weekends. But stop in for a late lunch or weeknight burger and a beer, and you’ll get a different experience. The beef here is grass-fed, New Mexico-grown, and steroid- and antibiotic-free, and the cooks at Monte Vista deserve praise for what they do with it. The freshly ground burgers are juicy and big, the steak frites hit the spot, and the beef skewers are tender and one of the best deals on cow in town. And if you do brave the weekend crowd, you’ll be rewarded by bowls of mussels served with your choice of several sauces, including coconut curry, Mexican and classic French. Served with a grilled baguette to soak up a small sea of broth, it’s a great way to fill a belly for $10. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

3.86 rating (88 votes)
If you like your comfort food with a gourmet twist, it’s here. Nob Hill Bar and Grill boasts meatloaf (crowned with smoked bacon) and burgers (American kobe). Signature cocktails, a few vegetarian entrées, and a comfy but chic atmosphere make Nob Hill Bar and Grill a solid addition to the neighborhood. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

3.51 rating (97 votes)
The surprising thing about Scalo is that it’s simultaneously more pleasant and less expensive than you’d think. It’s just as breezy and classy as ever in its high-ceilinged dining room, while the patio will have a nice, long season of pleasant weather. Now serving brunch on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and there’s plenty of fresh-pressed espresso to sip with it. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Cuisine: Brewery

3.5 rating (10 votes)
Tractor draws the crowd by serving beer that’s come a long way since head brewer Dave Hargis took over more than a year ago. Today’s Tractor offers up nine taps, with five constants (IPA, red, honey wheat, pale ale and stout) and four rotating taps. The doppelbock is excellent, and Tractor seems to excel at the bock styles (it took first place at the 2011 Santa Fe’s BockFest). Tractor plans to introduce live music in the near future. There is no kitchen, but Albuquerque’s best food trucks are almost always parked right outside. (Alibi Staff, September 29, 2011)

Touted as New Mexico’s largest restaurant, the North Valley’s El Pinto is best known for its gorgeous, shady environment (perennially Best Patio in our restaurant polls) and award-winning jarred salsa. Try it for margaritas, brunch and a little flan. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Best of Burque 2009 (Best Lesbian Bar): Exhale has live entertainment, a smokin' dance floor, naughty drinks and jalapeño poppers. Outside of a planet with pink clouds and rivers of chocolate, populated solely by lovely lesbian ladies, what more could a girl ask for? (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

Vegetarians will want to skip this one. The Steer features an array of very meaty dishes, from a locally raised beef hamburger to fried pork belly niblets dipped in powdered sugar. Oh, there’s a meatless salad or two available, but choosing one in lieu of the beef is tantamount to eating one of the fake burgers at Thai Vegan: pointless and disappointing. So sharpen those canine teeth and dispel any preconceptions you may have about eating light before you head up here. (Alibi Staff, March 12, 2014)

Vernon’s is a swanky underground spot for good eats and high times, delivered speakeasy-style. The dining room is walled with lustrous, ebony adobe, and the tables are clothed in crisp, black and white linens. By the glass or bottle, there’s plenty of quality hooch. The menu is classic steakhouse stuff, with beef tournedos in a silky demi-glace, fresh fish and a damn fine veal Oscar. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

2.95 rating (20 votes)
O'Niell's is comforting, a little cheeky and unapologetically Irish-American. The Juan Tabo location offers a gigantic patio and more floor space, but still features old favorites like the “Burger in Paradise” and fish and chips. And there’s plenty of live music at both locations. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Albuquerque - Old Town

Draft Station

1720 Central Ave SW (Old Town)
Albuquerque NM 87104
(505) 247-0193

3.3 rating (60 votes)
This is Chama River’s beer-centric younger brother, and it’s poised to make an impact on the local pub scene. Naturally, plenty of Chama brews are on tap, but the lineup also features selections from other Albuquerque and Santa Fe breweries. Our favorite is the Scotia, a strong, sweet Scottish ale that’s perfect for sipping while you watch the Central traffic go by from the Draft Station’s patio. (Alibi Staff, August 27, 2014)
