Tractor draws the crowd by serving beer that’s come a long way since head brewer Dave Hargis took over more than a year ago. Today’s Tractor offers up nine taps, with five constants (IPA, red, honey wheat, pale ale and stout) and four rotating taps. The doppelbock is excellent, and Tractor seems to excel at the bock styles (it took first place at the 2011 Santa Fe’s BockFest). Tractor plans to introduce live music in the near future. There is no kitchen, but Albuquerque’s best food trucks are almost always parked right outside. A few years after being ousted from its nearly decade-long home in Nob Hill, O'Niell's Pub has migrated east up Central and reopened in a new (but reassuringly familiar) space. All the old standouts like fish and chips and the “Burger in Paradise” are still here and as good as they ever were. Tractor Brewing's O'Niell's Irish Red is a perfectly balanced beer drunk by itself or with everything from chicken wings to chocolate cake. They're comforting, a little cheeky and unapologetically Irish-American. Just like O'Niell's Pub. New Mexico's largest winery, St. Clair Vineyards has branched out into the food service sector. The casual, reasonably priced eatery is located just to the northwest of the Sheraton Old Town off Rio Grande. Regular live jazz music, two patios and a spacious front specialty wine and gift shop bring wine festival flair to thirsty Burqueños year-round, while the menu is built around the Vineyard's signature wines. We still miss Jack’s, but its copper-ceilinged replacement has been around long enough to become an institution itself. The rambly old building has plenty of dark corners to hide in as you make your way through the extensive beer menu, and if the weather’s nice, an inviting patio area to scarf down a brick-oven cooked pizza in the fresh Spring breeze. The space has high ceilings that remind us of a ski lodge bar, with an upscale feeling but less colorful sweaters. You'd never know it shares a wall with Uptown Sports Bar. ABQ Brew Pub’s kitchen boasts black cultured mussels in court-bouillon fumé, steaks with Chimayó chile rub and cheesecake with crème de cassis sauce. Ten taps host Sierra Blanca / Rio Grande offerings, available in 10-, 16-, or 22-ounce glasses ($3.25, $4 and $5.50). Four-ounce samplers go for $1 each. All the sizes fit nicely on high-tech, built-in coasters that keep drinks frosty. OK, so the elephants aren’t real, and you can’t ride on them, but the large dining room is full of carvings and sculptures of them, even more than palm trees. The food is Americanized Asian mishmash, with good salads and seafood. An organic green salad with walnuts and creamy gorgonzola was big and good, simple in a good way. The wood grilled trout with lobster sauce was pure joy to eat. Even better is the ahi tuna salad, available as both entrée and appetizer sized, which consists of slices of seared fish atop a pile of seaweed and salad greens, with pickled ginger and wasabi—and green sesame seeds. Get ready to drop some serious dough on this place, but if anything will get you into someone’s pants, it’d be a meal here. This joint is cool, smooth and classy, the
foie gras and Kobe beef are tender and delicious and even the mac and cheese is fancy-schmantzy with a sprinkling of shaved black truffles. Have an excellent glass of wine, an order of oysters Marcello and don’t forget to lay on the charm. Your date (and your libido) will thank you for it.
