Gecko’s tapas won our readers’ hearts in BoBR 2014, but it isn’t just the tapas that draw in a familiar and friendly crowd. On Mondays the burgers are all $5 each and come with fries or salad. Watch some sports, eat a burger and enjoy a seasonal ale. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Il Vicino’s thin-crusted, gourmet-topped pizzas are perennial favorites among Alibi readers, but the big salads are equally popular. Order at the register, and a server brings the food to your table, making weekday lunches speedy. The open kitchen gives you something to stare at while you wait. Stop in for a quick lunch or a late afternoon microbrew at one of the sidewalk tables.

If you like your comfort food with a gourmet twist, it’s here. Nob Hill Bar & Grill boasts meatloaf (crowned with smoked bacon) and burgers (American kobe). The appetizers and classic cocktails alone are worth the visit. Cheese sticks encrusted in nuts and miso-seared ahi tuna on wontons go down swimmingly (did we mention the saltwater aquarium?) with a signature cocktail or an organic ale. A few vegetarian entrées, decent hours, a full bar and comfy but chic atmosphere make Nob Hill Bar & Grill a solid addition to the neighborhood. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Tractor draws the crowd by serving beer that’s come a long way since head brewer Dave Hargis took over more than a year ago. Today’s Tractor offers up nine taps, with five constants (IPA, red, honey wheat, pale ale and stout) and four rotating taps. The doppelbock is excellent, and Tractor seems to excel at the bock styles (it took first place at the 2011 Santa Fe’s BockFest). Tractor plans to introduce live music in the near future. There is no kitchen, but Albuquerque’s best food trucks are almost always parked right outside. (Alibi Staff, September 29, 2011)

Best Wine Bar winners in 2008’s Best of Burque poll, Zinc is a delightfully renovated historic space in Nob Hill, reborn as an upscale restaurant serving elegant American food with noticeable French inspiration. Thirsty? Don't miss the mocha, with “Zinc” written in chocolate syrup, or the wonderful selection of wines by the glass. Downstairs, the wine bar attracts a younger crowd for drinks and music.

Vegetarians will want to skip this one. The Steer features an array of very meaty dishes, from a locally raised beef hamburger to fried pork belly niblets dipped in powdered sugar. Oh, there’s a meatless salad or two available, but choosing one in lieu of the beef is tantamount to eating one of the fake burgers at Thai Vegan: pointless and disappointing. So sharpen those canine teeth and dispel any preconceptions you may have about eating light before you head up here. (Alibi Staff, March 12, 2014)

O'Niell's Pub is back—and serves food until midnight on weekdays! A few years after being ousted from its nearly decade-long home in Nob Hill, O'Niell's Pub has migrated east up Central and reopened in a new (but reassuringly familiar) space. All the old standouts like fish and chips and the “Burger in Paradise” are still here and as good as they ever were. Tractor Brewing's O'Niell's Irish Red is a perfectly balanced beer drunk by itself or with everything from chicken wings to chocolate cake. They're comforting, a little cheeky and unapologetically Irish-American. Just like O'Niell's Pub. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

If you’re tired of the one-note mediocre New Mexican food that Old Town has become infamous for, look no further than this patio dining restaurant, pleasantly located beneath a spreading elm tree on the east side of Old Town. Fantastic hamburgers, Mexican pizzas and street tacos all await your jaded palate, and there’s plenty of local beer on tap to wash them down with. Finally, a new reason for locals to hit the plaza. Draft Station

1720 Central Ave SW (Old Town)
Albuquerque NM 87104
(505) 247-0193

4.5 rating (2 votes)
This is Chama River’s beer-centric younger brother, and it’s poised to make an impact on the local pub scene. Naturally, plenty of Chama brews are on tap, but the lineup also features selections from other Albuquerque and Santa Fe breweries. Our favorite is the Scotia, a strong, sweet Scottish ale that’s perfect for sipping while you watch the Central traffic go by from the Draft Station’s patio. (Alibi Staff, August 27, 2014)

St. Clair Vineyards has been operating this bistro to local acclaim since 2005. Two patios and a spacious front, specialty wines and a well-stocked gift shop bring wine festival flair to thirsty Burqueños year-round. Enjoy a glass of Pinot Grigio, and enjoy live music Thursday-Saturday. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Look beyond the marketing gimmick of the poor, sweaty guy asphyxiating on the Central median, face concealed behind a sequined Mexican wrestling mask. Either chow down inside the colorful restaurant (try the fresh peanut salsa and horchata ) or have items from its extensive menu delivered directly to your door. Sundays feature a spectacular display of tableside live mariachi music. (Be forewarned: If you know a little Spanish, your interactions with the staff will go much more smoothly.) Open ’til 11 p.m.! We still miss Jack’s, but its copper-ceilinged replacement has been around long enough to become an institution itself. The rambly old building has plenty of dark corners to hide in as you make your way through the extensive beer menu, and if the weather’s nice, an inviting patio area to scarf down a brick-oven cooked pizza in the fresh Spring breeze. O'Niell's is comforting, a little cheeky and unapologetically Irish-American. The menu features favorites like the “Burger in Paradise” and fish and chips, and there’s a children’s menu to satisfy the little ones. The huge, enclosed patio is gorgeous, with enough space for boisterous tables of in-laws and extra kids to sit comfortably, and of course beer on tap to help the experience go down smoothly.
