Trombino's Bistro Italiano has been an institution of family-style Italian dining in the Heights for almost 30 years. It houses an impressively fat menu that includes a full bar, espresso drinks and an ample wine list. The service is quicker than a Hollywood marriage, and the waitstaff seems particularly knowledgeable about the food and wines. Gravitate to the more rustic Italian fare—lemon-basil chicken salad, grilled homemade Italian sausage or meatballs, prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, and manicotti are amply portioned and tasty. Either way, the place has a great beer selection, including a bevy of their own brews. The food is approachable American stuff that, coincidentally, goes pretty damn well with beer. Something that sets Doc & Eddy’s apart from other sports bars is that no cover charge is extracted on Ultimate Fighting Championship nights. What you
will
find are pool tables, waitresses who are not dressed like strippers (TDs is across the parking lot if that’s what you’re after—it also airs UFC) and a kitchen staff that takes its job seriously. The Lobo burger is a thing of beauty, with smoked bacon sparring nicely with cheese and green chile. The fries are skin-on, and the legit red chile is medium spiced with the occasional fleck of coriander. Maybe everyone doesn’t know your name, but it’s pleasant and friendly—even to Brock Lesnar fans. The focus at Nexus is on balanced, drinkable beers that don’t smash customers in the mouth by a hop assault. That being said, Nexus beat out stalwart area breweries at the 2011 NM IPA Challenge. There are nine styles featured on tap, including standouts IPA, ESB, cream and Belgian white. The brewery is attracting quite a following, both for the beer and as a “New Mexican soul food” gastropub. The menu offers specialties of Southern-fried po’boys and the delicious marriage of chicken and waffles. It’s just the place to take your corn-bread-and-Frito-pie-craving friends while still getting your craft beer fix. And there’s live music, too. Nexus has bands booked several nights a week. If you’re in the mood for an amenable French brunch, lunch or dinner, say

to La Provence. Nob Hill's newest restaurant is still a little rough around the edges, but has the potential to be great. The wine bar in the front of the restaurant (chockfull of rare-find French wines) is very cozy, while the back dining room, with its tables packed tightly together, feels cramped at peak hours. Likewise, the waitstaff can come off as inexperienced, but is very nice and accommodating nonetheless. Try the
moules frites
(mussels steamed in white wine) served with a side of little truffle french fries or the
confit de canard aux lentilles

With sometimes too-loud live music and a party-hard crowd, it’s usually best to avoid this place on the weekends. But stop in for a late lunch or weeknight burger and a beer, and you’ll get a different experience. The beef here is grass-fed, New Mexico-grown, and steroid- and antibiotic-free, and the cooks at Monte Vista deserve praise for what they do with it. The freshly ground burgers are juicy and big, the steak frites hit the spot, and the beef skewers are tender and one of the best deals on cow in town. And if you do brave the weekend crowd, you’ll be rewarded by bowls of mussels served with your choice of several sauces, including coconut curry, Mexican and classic French. You love Yanni's. So do we. As the only restaurant in Albuquerque with a diverse and refined Greek-influenced Mediterranean menu, who can top them? Their adjoined Opa Bar seats about 85 people and is open for lunch, dinner or just cocktails. Painted deep red, dimly lit and accented with lots of dark wood, the lounge provides a stark contrast to the bright, light and airy dining rooms at Yanni's.
