The old home of Pearl's Dive has a new lease on life. Brainchild of local band The Dirty Novels, the Blackbird has been appropriately rock ’n’ rolled with excellent music, black-clad waitresses and a cool look. There are an impressive number of draft and bottled beers, and a few nice wines by the glass, which are fan-freaking-tastic on the back patio. By the way, "buvette" (boo-vet) is a loose French translation for "refreshment bar." Now you’re really in the know.

Modeled after a New York loft, Slate Street’s wine bar has an ultra-hip, modern, minimalist feel. This wine list is rhythmic, flowing and poetic, and it’s the most pleasurable to read and easiest to comprehend in Albuquerque. The wines are listed by style—“just a little sweet,” “ABC: Anything But Chardonnay” or “sexy, elegant, austere”—not varietal or region. Demystifying the label like this makes it easy for patrons to pair wine and food. The listings are simple, but not simplistic. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

The Library began as a concept bar a few years ago in Tempe, Ariz., catering to the lunch and dinner crowd, transforming in the later hours of the evening into a nightclub. The food is pretty standard bar fare with burgers and the like—but at least in this case you’ll be served by Catholic schoolgirl-attired waitresses, who, at prescribed times during the night, will dance on the bar mere inches from your taco plate. If jocked-out Humphrey Bogart and sorority-girl Lauren Bacall had to pick a spot in this town to stare dreamily into each other’s eyes, and then polish off a plate of sliders, they’d probably do it at Maloney’s. Located smack in the center of Downtown, this pub and eatery boasts a movie star-themed menu, rock-star music and one of the the most popular patios in the Burque. Check out their Sierra Nevada-battered onion rings with chipotle ranch dressing or their signature “spuds Maloney” loaded potato skins. And with no cover charge, even Sinatra’s limo driver can afford to roll on in. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Gecko’s has expanded with a popular Northeast Heights location—housed in a building that looks like a jukebox, for some reason. Even though it’s clear across town, you’ll still probably bump into folks you know as you’re sipping a wicked Bloody Mary and enjoying tidbits from the affordably priced tapas menu. Il Vicino’s thin-crusted, gourmet-topped pizzas are perennial favorites among Alibi readers, but the big salads are equally popular. Order at the register and a server brings the food to your table, making weekday lunches speedy. The open kitchen gives you something to stare at while you wait. Stop in for a quick lunch or a late afternoon microbrew at one of the patio tables. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Roughhewn wood planks lead you into this nautically themed steak and seafood restaurant, which doesn’t start seating for dinner until 5 p.m. Luckily, happy hour begins at 4 p.m. Have a “Lady Godiva” hot cocktail and a baker's dozen of “topless” oysters in the bar while you wait. Then dive into creamy clam chowder, 10-ounce, butter-sweet Australian lobster tail and Ranchero center-cut top sirloin. There's plenty of key lime pie in the icebox and Phil Collins on the speakers.

Wine flights are the best way to try different selections without going broke, and Savoy has some interesting choices. They pair perfectly with the restaurant’s stunning interiors and lovely New American dishes—grouper in an almond-romesco sauce, seafood linguine, grilled peach and seared sea scallop salads, and the house charcuterie plate. For dessert, there’s praline-chocolate torte ($6), house-made blackberry-Chambord ice cream ($3.50), cheese plates and, of course, a glass of La Spinetta Moscato d’Asti ($5). Open ’til 10 p.m. weekdays, 11 p.m. weekends. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

This used to be the Blue Corn Café and Brewery, but it's been rechristened as Chama River Brewing Company. Either way, the place has a great beer selection, including a bevy of their own brews. The food is approachable American stuff that, coincidentally, goes pretty damn well with beer. And, according to the 2007 BoB Restaurants poll, it even has the Best Bread Basket around. Say yes to yeast. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Something that sets Doc & Eddy’s apart from other sports bars is that no cover charge is extracted on Ultimate Fighting Championship nights. What you will find are pool tables, waitresses who are not dressed like strippers (TDs is across the parking lot if that’s what you’re after—it also airs UFC) and a kitchen staff that takes its job seriously. The Lobo burger is a thing of beauty, with smoked bacon sparring nicely with cheese and green chile. The fries are skin-on, and the legit red chile is medium spiced with the occasional fleck of coriander. Maybe everyone doesn’t know your name, but it’s pleasant and friendly—even to Brock Lesnar fans. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

At first glance, The Fox and Hound is your typical sports bar, hip-hop music blasting, TVs blaring, and pretty waitresses bustling. But one glance at the extensive menu is all it takes to clue you in that it is a fine restaurant as well. Unlike the usual fried piece of beer sponge that you get at most sports bars, the menu offers more elegant dishes like blackened mahi-mahi. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

IVB Canteen picks up where the Vassar tap room left off. The canteen is spacious, and so is a shaded patio filled with picnic benches—a comfortable spot to enjoy the brew, regular live music and a casual menu. There’s no pizza here, but there are satisfying sandwiches, burgers and salads. As always, the ingredients are top-notch, the microbrews are award-winning, and the homebrewed root beer float is a real treat. (Alibi Staff, April 14, 2011)

The focus at Nexus is on balanced, drinkable beers that don’t smash customers in the mouth by a hop assault. That being said, Nexus beat out stalwart area breweries at the 2011 NM IPA Challenge. There are nine styles featured on tap, including standouts IPA, ESB, cream and Belgian white. The brewery is attracting quite a following, both for the beer and as a soul food gastropub. The menu offers specialties of Southern-fried po’boys and the delicious marriage of chicken and waffles. It’s just the place to take your soul-food-craving friends while still getting your craft beer fix. And there’s live music, too. Nexus has bands booked two to three nights a week.
