Technically speaking, a dive bar indicates an establishment of ill repute. Furthermore, while we're being technical, Burt's Tiki Lounge is a tiki bar. In any case, however rough around the edges it may be, we think Burt's is one of the city's finest places to wet one's whistle, and so do you. Plus, the bartenders make an excellent Mai Tai. Modeled after a New York loft, Slate Street’s wine bar has an ultra-hip, modern, minimalist feel. This wine list is rhythmic, flowing and poetic, and it’s the most pleasurable to read and easiest to comprehend in Albuquerque. The wines are listed by style—“just a little sweet,” “ABC: Anything But Chardonnay” or “sexy, elegant, austere”—not varietal or region. Demystifying the label like this makes it easy for patrons to pair wine and food. The listings are simple, but not simplistic. Jeff Erway presents a variety of beer styles brewed right on the premises, one of which will almost certainly fill your specific craving. In addition to the cold taps, one or two of the beers are often available woody and cellar-temperature from the cask. As you sip, play a game of pool upstairs, scratch under your well-behaved pet’s collar and chat with the always-friendly fellow beer-lovers. A bar you can smoke in! Imbibe is an über-trendy cigar lounge with backlit smoke-tendril art and contemporary seating. There are hordes of annoying knockoff-clad barflies as far as the eye can see, but the humidor is well-stocked and well-attended by knowledgeable staff, and there’s a rooftop deck (if you can make it up there; there’s always a line). The surprising thing about Scalo is that it’s simultaneously more pleasant and less expensive than you’d think. It’s just as breezy and classy as ever in its high-ceilinged dining room, while the patio will have a nice, long season of pleasant weather. Now serving brunch on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and there’s plenty of fresh-pressed espresso to sip with it.
