Paul’s is the kind of place normally associated with slabs of artery-clogging red meat, liver-corroding martinis and (until recently) the freedom to light up during dinner. With high-backed banquette seating and intimate mood lighting, it's the perfect date destination—especially if your suitor is paying. Open until 10 p.m. weeknights, 11 p.m. weekends. I don't know who the Jackasses are that rated it so low but it's better than the vast majority of steakhouse options in town. As a direct comparison, the meals are both better and cheaper than Marcello's Chophouse. Better quality than Texas Roadhouse for an equivalent price, not to mention you don't have to eat ankle deep in peanut shells and they serve you with clean dishes. This place is classic. Highly recommended.

The murky lounge is the best. Still smells like decades of cigarette smoke. You can be in there at high noon and it's still as dark as midnight.
The drinks are stiff, the food is surf-and-turf perfection, and the staff treats you like a king.

The history of this place is astounding. It has been here for decades, and the legacy of high-quality food service is repeated on a daily basis.
This is old-world ABQ dining at it's best. No chain corporate-controlled SLOP-HOUSE here folks, it is the real deal. Go ahead, treat yourselves to a fine if not excellent experience.

I ate a Paul's for the first time a few weeks ago and wasn't impressed. Yes, the drinks were strong, but I'm told the lights were not as low as they once were and the food, well, my fish was mushy and the mashed potatoes tasted like they came out of a box. It was fun to think of Manny Aragon doing all of those dirty deals over three cocktail lunches in that lounge, though.
Go to the Monte Carlo if you want a similar atmosphere and food that's actually delicious.

and it's admittedly been a while, there was definitely a diner vibe. fast paced waitstaff, up beat music, not low lights, and i feel like the food came up in a diner like window, possibly with a bell. there were kids in highchairs there. granted it was lunch, but still. the only thing that was similar to Paul's is that it had the 70's decor.

Monte Carlo: it's the blue-collar version of Paul's, but I like it just fine anyhow. Cons: lights too high, no top-shelf booze, limited menu. Pros: cheaper than Paul's.
Paul's: Seafood is generally really good. I too have one (and only one) bad meal story from Paul's, but the other dozens of times I've been there, everything has been worth the dough. Cons: expensive! also, lots of Republicans. Pros: everything else.
