Under new management, the same customers have been coming to this Heights institution since it opened nearly 40 years ago, opting for huge portions of inexpensive New Mexican food. There’s nothing fancy going on here, and that’s the way they like it. Oh, except the honey is made from the pollen of North Valley wildflowers. But that’s about it for fancy.

Things started out well here. We ordered chips and salsa as an appetizer. The chips were warm and tasted like they were fresh from the fryer. The salsa had a medium level of spiciness to it with nice chunks of green chile. From this first taste of Taco Sal I thought the rest of the food would be on the same level… Not so much.

I ordered the chicharron burrito plate with refried beans and papas. The papas tasted like they had been sitting around for a while. They were a little chewy but could have been good if they were fresh. The refried beans were super runny and I couldn’t find any evidence that these had ever been whole beans. If it wasn’t for the burrito and papas creating a dam, the beans would have spread across the entire plate.

The burrito had chicharron and the previously described runny beans inside and was smothered in red chile. The chicharron just tasted like very dry pork. There wasn’t enough crispy pig fat for this meat to be considered chicharron in my opinion. I’ve definitely had better chicharron. The red chile was tasty. It had a good flavor and was very enjoyable. If I wasn’t able to soak the meat in this chile, it would have been inedible.

All in all, there wasn’t enough good about this $10 meal to make me want to go back again. Wooden Fork rating.
