The Alibi Kicks Even More Ass Than You Thought

Man, we’ve gotten some really great awards this year.

A few months ago, we sent some manilla envelopes off to the National Federation of Press Women to compete against non-daily papers across the country. To be honest, we weren’t so sure we’d ever hear from them again, and promptly forgot about the whole thing.

But today, we got some happy surprises in the old inbox.

Food and Music Editor Laura Marrich rocked first place in the national competition for Section Edited by Entrant. She also snagged third for Single Page Edited by Entrant.

Editor in Chief Steven Robert Allen stole the silver for Publication Regularly Edited by Entrant.

News/Managing Editor Christie Chisholm could proudly hoist a third-place trophy, if there was one, for her news story “Intolerable.”

Crowns all around. Let the reveling commence.

  • No doubt  [ Fri Jul 6 2007 7:08 PM ]

Was there ever any doubt about it?

  • Tell me something I *don't* know  [ Fri Jul 6 2007 9:29 PM ]

Look at the rags in town. The Alibi is da bomb--smart, thoughtful and often provocative articles with a sarcastic tone...gotta love it.

  • Thanks for reveling with us guys.   [ Sat Jul 7 2007 5:13 PM ]

    Much obliged.

  • Alibi FTW  [ Sat Jul 7 2007 5:45 PM ]

    nuff said.

  • Not more than I thought  [ Sun Jul 8 2007 1:17 AM ]

but super news, certainly. I suspect it's only the beginning.

  • Didn't Crosswinds used to win all those awards before they left for greener pastures?  [ Sun Jul 8 2007 11:31 AM ]

Is it correct that they always won more awards than the Alibi?

  • I don't know what 7 meds you're on....  [ Sun Jul 8 2007 6:21 PM ]

but you should seriously have a clue about the subject before you write some half-assed, insulting blog about the newspaper whose website you are blogging on. Crosswinds did not exactly disperse their staff to go onto greener pastures. I'm not gonna bash them posthumously, so suffice it to say that anyone who is in the business knows the story, and you don't, so shut up.

I don't think that the amount of awards won is necessarily indicative of anything other than the hard work and dedication of the writers who submitted their stories for consideration. So take your passive-aggressive doomesday bullshit and shove it in the hole where your daily prune juice exits.

  • GOOD JOB JENN-TASTIC!  [ Sun Jul 8 2007 8:57 PM ]

fuck haters, life is too short.

  • Crosswinds was ...  [ Mon Jul 9 2007 8:55 AM ]

... a good little paper, but it's not correct to say that they always won more awards than the Alibi. They merely promoted their victories that way, which is fine--spin makes the world go 'round. They did particularly well, for example, during a year when the Alibi didn't enter ANY press contests.

Over the years, including those years when Crosswinds was still around, the Alibi has won stacks and stacks of regional and national awards. (To my knowledge, Crosswinds never won any national awards.) We haven't always done a good job of letting our readers know this, but it's the case nonetheless.

What a gift we have in this little back watertown, the Alibi, all the best staff and writers, Thanks Man!

Way to overreact over a post.....

  • Not Really  [ Tue Jul 10 2007 6:36 PM ]

I am an open-minded person, and I welcome constructive criticism by individuals who are knowledgeable and/or well-meaning. I do, however, abhor rudeness for its own sake. Especially ignorant rudeness.

  • Yeah  [ Tue Jul 10 2007 6:56 PM ]

How dare they ask a question! O'Doyle's Rule!

  • Constructive criticism especially for Jenn-tastic  [ Tue Jul 10 2007 10:06 PM ]

Letters: why not have more of them in this so-called community newspaper? They don't cost anything, so there's no whining about that, and they involve actual people with other opinions from Albuquerque (natives?) that aren't working at the alibi, (or at least I hope that is the case.)

News: Saddest of all this part of the newspaper can't decide whether to cover local news or national news. The egos behind the section aren't apparently fulfilled with covering local news which alibi admittedly does most of the time better than the Journal, Tribune, business weekly and iQ put together. But at the same time the worst sin of all is committed on a regular basis: a good local news story without any follow-up ever. That is just so lame, the stories don't end because you wrote once about them. Then to top it off you have a news editor who rarely actually writes, try to explain that! At least there is a consistent writer to cover the city council.

Film: When Devin O'Leery goes you people might as well all pack it in. The guy can write about anything and not only covers, nearly single=handedly the film and tv writing but contributes to the best column, though fluffy-fun, in the news section as well provided the occasional larger cover story in news or entertainment.

Art: Editor Allen does a good job with art, no doubt, but so regularly farms out his book reviews that I have actually come to prefer writers like John Freeman or Marisa, who seems to be developing nicely along the lines of o'Leery--she'll provide nice stories in any part of the paper when the editors are too lazy or too full of themselves to put pen to paper, or however you do it these days.

Food; What a waste, Laura M might as well just give her job to Jennifer Wolitz or to Jessica Car, since her contributions are apparently only metaphysical and never could sully her standards with ink and paper.

Music: Hmm, less Laura then ever though you could argue that being editor of two sections is hard work and probably represents cheap-ass, corner-cutting cost measures by owner/managers. But still, to lord over two sections and then to resolve that the best way to handle them both is to do nothing for either, seems so lame there should be a law against it.

Thank god for Marisa and Amy D. who we need to read more of. And, this bout of Constructive Criticism is only about the newspaper itself, where o were are the actual staffers on the blog? At least the people at Duke City Fix [link] are regularly contributing to the point where you can get a feel for their positions on certain things and can begin to follow them as writers.

Come on Jenn, rip me apart! I know I have it coming.

  • who were the competitors  [ Thu Jul 12 2007 11:29 AM ]

for these NFPW awards, that's what I would like to know. I hear that the AAN awards are a pretty big deal, congrats on those! but who else submits to NFPW? Guess I'll check the link you supplied, eh?

  • To each their own opinion  [ Thu Jul 12 2007 12:26 PM ]

I love your paper. It totally rocks and your awards just prove even more that you do have quality writing and coverage. Thanks for your hard work and giving ABQ a great alt paper.

  • Wow, you just took an existencial dump.  [ Thu Jul 19 2007 11:13 PM ]

I hope you feel better, because you've obviously been holding that in for a minute. Normally I'd tell you that it's not the alibi's fault that you got stood up on prom night, or that your mummy and daddy didn't give you enough hugs and kisses. But discourse is a beautiful thing, and so in the spirit of honest dialogue I will give you props for getting your opinion out there.

Letters: The alibi prints plenty of letters. They print plenty of letters, even the ones bagging on them. And no, the staff doesn't write them. They have class and ethics, and they are also quite busy doing their jobs. If you want more drama, keep blogging. It's better than letters, because other people can respond in a more timely fashion and grievances can be aired to your little heart's content.

News: Give an example of what you'd like to see followed up on, and fire it off to Christie. She works her ass off to write socially relevant, intelligent and compassionate articles and you should check out some of her full full-length feature pieces. She is amazing, and dedicated. It is not at all easy to be an editor, and often times you have to work 10 times harder than the writers, for no more pay or glory. If you had ever done it, you would know this.

You are 100 % right about Devin. I hope he lives to be a hundred, and keeps writing. He is also a cool-down to earth person, and will talk to anyone. That's more than I can say for writers at other venues, whose imagined celebrity status makes them unapproachable and snotty.

Art: Steve, and other editors have to be great writers to become editors in the first place. I don't know what crap-ass McJob you are using as a basis for comparison, but truly fantastic editors aren't born, they are bred through hard work and making their bones just like any other job.

Food and Music: Marisa, Amy and Jessica are the future. I sleep fine at night knowing that their talent will ensure the alibi stays in the hands of those who will make a difference. They change the world every day, and even if they don't know it, they are a fine example of what it means to choose the principles over more money. Any of these fine ladies could go to other publications, or do PR work making a shit-ton more cash, and it should tell you something that they chose the alibi.

Publisher Carl has a difficult, unenviable job. He is in charge of keeping the entire paper operating through both fat and lean times, and even though you bitch about "cheap-ass, corner-cutting cost measures by owner/managers," without people like Carl to make the tough calls, there would be no alibi. Give the guy some fucking respect, already.

And Laura Marrich. There isn't enough space on this blog to explain how her leadership and intuition have been an example to burgeoning music and food writers. She has a natural feel for writing that one rarely sees in someone young. She is also the nicest person on the planet, and if you knew anything about her, you'd know that she is the last person on this shiny rock to lord anything over anyone. Jennifer Wohletz kicks serious ass, don't get me wrong, but someone has to keep Jennifer in line, keep her honest, and fix her mistakes. She is a brilliant writer, but also a huge pain in the ass.

And finally, how do you know you aren't talking to staffers? You very well may be.

I'm done now, except to say that you don't know your ass from a chicken dumpling, and you obviously aren't a writer because your spelling, grammar and comma usage sucks.

    Boo-yahhh

  • missing the Alibi  [ Thu Jul 19 2007 11:37 PM ]

I miss the physical touch of the paper. The touch that those pages gives one is an existential feeling (Sartre).

To sit at a window in Frontier and people watch as I read the alternatives is no longer. It is wonderful that the Alibi is online and one may access it from anywhere around this globe. Through the distance one is still able to keep the Albuquerque flame glowing and growing inside.

    Kudos to the Alibi.

  • Yo ifer  [ Fri Jul 20 2007 7:00 AM ]

As in Jenn. you know i was j/k up there, right? I would never really think you would vomit up some serious criticism without slapping your name on it, unlike *some* people we know (rhymes with "LeavenedHeads").

Anyway, thanks for jousting on our behalf.

And now back to glorious reveling!

  • Hah!  [ Fri Jul 20 2007 8:15 AM ]

Yes, Miss Wohletz is a brilliant writer. And humble, too.

  • I've always liked..  [ Fri Jul 20 2007 9:49 PM ]

the fact that you, marisa, just use your name as a handle. Just like that. No doubts or qualms. I love you and your cool earrings, and come to think of it, that other jackhole might be my mother. I doubt it, but she was pretty much a hater, too.
