Psychedelic Jazz-Rock Fusion Video of the Day

Play Youtube Video
Set the controls for the heart of the sun: Miles electric, Montreux ’73.

Announcing a new alibi.com feature. No, really. If NPR can have Performance Today (i.e., daily updates in a field of music where there has been no appreciable development for a hundred years), who’s gonna say it can’t be done?

The back-story: After hooking up with his hot young wife Betty (herself the subject of some recent reissues), Miles Davis realized he was out-of-fucking-touch with youth culture and retooled his career with a sound that would horrify jazz traditionalists and echo for decades in pop culture. Miles forbade his musicians to practice. They had to just feel it. And, baby, they did. Here’s proof.

It is what it is, but I never really warmed to it to an extent that I could say I know it. It's a harsh and uninviting adventure that holds a few pockets of beauty but far more shale slopes. Rather than a dark ride, it is an ugly ride and, music being what it is, one that you can step out of whenever it becomes a chore. I haven't listened to BB for ten years or so, and I never really forced myself to endure it or make sense of it. Many people like Jerry have, though. I suppose I should give it another shake and see if I can find more beauty than I did before, instead of just changing the channel. Besides, I think those paintings the elephant makes are trunktastic.

I hope there's a jazz-rock video of the day every day. Let me know if you need suggestions.

I never really had to *endure* Bitches Brew. It sounded groovy immediately.

It's crazy stoned improv, yes, but the interesting thing about BB is how it was actually constructed in the editing room by Teo Macero. Some of the more recognizable phrasing was never played that way by the band. Miles then emulated the edits in live shows, bringing the sound full circle. So it's essentially a studio work.
