SXSW Scraps: Parte Final

We saw more bands than these, but not being crackerjack photographers ....

Oooooh, DeVotchKa. Singer Nick Urata holds nothing back during one of the band’s many packed showcases.

Tapes N Tapes frontman Josh Grier’s guitar strap expanded and slipped during a humid hot set at Emo’s. Part of the heat was emanating from the hundreds of bodies sardined into the outdoor portion of the venue.

El-P, on-point and looking slightly possessed due to camera-induced gleam eye. He slaps himself in the face when he performs, which now that I think back on it, seems weird.

Kits, sticks and megaphones are the only equipment used by the four drummers of Foot Village. The set was thrilling but way too short.

This is my favorite Foot Village member. Anyone know her name? She screams, stands on her stool, chants, runs through the crowd with a megaphone and is otherwise enchanting.

X performs a simulcast concert at the Austin Convention Center. More than 30 years after the band’s L.A. inception, Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake are sharper than ever together. On the set list (that I remember): “Devil Doll,” “The Hungry Wolf,” “In This House the I Call Home,” “Los Angeles,” “Riding with Mary,” “We’re Desperate,” “White Girl” and “Your Phone’s Off the Hook.” These songs, and so many more, put X at the summit of America’s songwriting craft. Magical.

No need to be catty, Fluff. And I wasn't apologizing for our photo coverage of SXSW. Bad lighting conditions, tempermental cameras and many ounces of suds meant the occassionally bad photo. At a couple of the shows, I took a bunch of photos, all of which were completely unusable upon review. I should add that Laura's Foot Village shots are the sickest.

Further, why should we bother to cover SXSW? Because a chunk of the nation's seriously touring bands are there. These are bands that if you haven't heard of, you probably will if they stick with it.

And I'll mention one last time that you don't need to spend hundreds on a badge to party at SXSW. There are heaps of free shows. You could go to a free nonshowcase event every hour for days. And many of the same bands that are playing the official shows are playing the unofficial ones.

The badge is nice, though, for convenience sake. Plus there's lots of panels and a tradeshow you can scope out.

Whatevs. Point being, see as much music as you can in town or out of it.
