  • Pics.  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 11:08 AM ]

Don't take pics of the Pueblos on USA land? Freaking dumb.

  • what?  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 11:16 AM ]

Why can't people just respect other peoples wishes? For them it's like people going up to your lawn and taking pics of your house. Come on be sensitive.

  • Milks of Wrath  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 11:48 AM ]

A manager and a driver at the milk plant are getting the death sentence? They couldn't find someone a little higher up to take the blame? And, jesus, the death sentence?

yes, China is very big on executions. Shop Wal-Mart!

  • Google earth.  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 12:26 PM ]

WTF are they gonna do about Google Earth and all of that shit? Hello!!! Sacred land...with casinos...hmmm. DUH!

  • And...  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 12:46 PM ]

...why would someone just take pictures of someones house just to do it? Photographers and whoever else take those pictures as a memory. Or maybe they thought it was just plain beautiful. They're arguing that white people took this land from them. Well, so did the Spanish. This is a free country. UNITED States of America. It's not supposed to be separated.

  • No, not really  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:00 PM ]

Would you want people taking pictures of your house or your family members because they thought they were "exotic"?

Being "united" means learning how to respect the wishes of other people. It's not a license to do whatever the hell you want.

  • What the hell?  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:08 PM ]

What the hell does the word "united" have to do with wishes at all? United means one. America is AMERICA. So don't give me that bullshit.

  • I would suspect that...  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:09 PM ]

The manager and the driver had a deal in which they were mixing melamine into the formula and then diverting the milk for sale on the black market. In the plant volumes of materials in, volumes of formula out, and batch testing for protein content would be tracked, so adding the melamine, which registers a false positive on most protein assays, would allow them to cut it with water and still have the assay register as normal, allowing diversion of the milk or milk powder that was supposed to be in it. The manager would have access to the mixing tanks and could have been doing the adulteration, but he needed the driver to be in on it to smuggle the melamine in and the milk out. They probably didn't have evidence that the CEO was actually involved, other than not having good enough quality and security procedure in place to prevent it, so she wasn't brought up on capital charges, but she did get life in prison. In China that really means life in prison, so it's a pretty grim sentence.

They're big on the death penalty there, especially for contaminated food products. A couple years ago they executed the director of their equivalent of the FDA since he was found to have taken bribes to register companies producing animal feed and components of animal feed without proper testing and factory audits, which resulted in the melamine contaminated pet food on the US market in 2007. One of the pet food factory owners burned down his factory to hide evidence and went on the run, I haven't heard if they caught him, or what was done with the others. Those were all new fly by night companies which the FDA director had gotten kickbacks from, so I suspect many of them just took their money and went into hiding. If found, I have little doubt they would be executed.

  • it's their land  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:32 PM ]

what's the big deal with respecting their wishes?

  • This is...  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:34 PM ]

every AMERICAN'S COUNTRY!!! But, they can drive on our land, drunk. And killing people on OUR land. Hmmm.

  • I hope Native Americans  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:36 PM ]

log in and share their feelings. Not that they have to explain themselves, but I would love to hear

feelings on what FelixZeeKitten is expressing.

  • Anyone  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:40 PM ]

who drinks and drives is usually doing it off of their own property. Not sure I get the logic on that one.

  • Why's that?  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:44 PM ]

Do I come across as racist? I'm about as mixed as they come. They want to be separated. Their own little nation, but they can take our money. And water. But we can't take a fucking picture. As for drinking and driving, they do it off their property, but that's why innocent people are killed? Find a way to get the logic.

  • nope  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:49 PM ]

you're still not making sense to me. How is Native American drinking and driving any different from anyone drinking and driving?

  • huh?  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:52 PM ]

But, they can drive on our land, drunk. And killing people on OUR land.

Actually, just like they have a rule against taking pictures, we happen to have a rule against that.

  • I'm not saying...  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:52 PM ]

That it's ok for anybody to drink and drive. But when we find them HERE, with someone killed...doesn't that mean they were disrespecting US?

  • Some people may  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:54 PM ]

find "no pictures" a stupid "tradition" but a lot of cultures have traditions that seem stupid. So what, it's their tradition. I don't have a problem respecting other people's traditions.

  • Sure Sure  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:56 PM ]

anyone who drinks and drives is being disrespectful. But just because some idiot that happens to be Native American drinks and drives it doesn't mean I feel the need to disrespect his culture just because HE did something stupid.

  • So, it seems  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 1:59 PM ]

your real beef is you don't believe Native Americans should be able to keep the measly amount of land the US gave them. That they shouldn't want to live differently. That they are somewhat parasitic. That they can't call themselves American because of these actions. hmmm. That's a more interesting argument.

  • correction  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 2:00 PM ]

not "gave" them, let them keep.

  • Everyone  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 2:04 PM ]

Knows the rules. I get flustered because I don't agree. But that's just how I am.

    P.S.

I could've sworn that said "Barack Obama Pie. plus one."

  • I can smell us getting smarter by the minute.  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 2:06 PM ]

mmm. barack obama pie. plus one. that's better.

  • they  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 2:08 PM ]

But when we find them HERE, with someone killed...doesn't that mean they were disrespecting US?

Sure, but don't lose track of what the word "they" refers to. It refers to an individual, not a whole culture, and has no bearing on the conduct of whoever made up the no-pictures rule.

I think a lot of us white guys who have never stolen anyone's land, can relate to how frustrating it can be when someone overgeneralizes.

  • Ok then.  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 2:11 PM ]

    Yes, fluffy. Much. :]

Sloppy, I can see both sides, for sure.

  • Please don't take photos of me while I'm eating.  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 2:40 PM ]

and stop looking at my car. Other than that, we're good.

  • I missed all this today  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 4:12 PM ]

I'm sad there are people who feel like felix, it is so ignorant.

Question: Are native americans the only ones that drink and drive? NO!

You are the only person who is taking the actual meaning of 'United' out of this whole discussion. We should be able to live along side anyone or any culture while respecting them for who they are and what they believe. That is what the united states is about. Not:

This is a free country. UNITED States of America. It's not supposed to be separated. This is every AMERICAN'S COUNTRY!!! But, they can drive on our land, drunk. And killing people on OUR land. Hmmm.

You miss the whole point, this is about respect.

  • Respect was our point but  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 4:19 PM ]

I don't think it was Felix's. I feel that she was trying to get at something else- trying to point out a double standard maybe. It made her look a little intolerant on the surface, but I don't think that it was what was really going on. I may be completely wrong but that's what I was getting.

  • agreed  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 4:24 PM ]

Yes I know what your point was for sure.

I understand that tolerance for other cultures isn't something that everyone is brought up with or learned right away. I hope that people who don't understand right away take a seat back and try to understand where others (different people) are coming from. Come on aren't we all watching Lost here? This discussion is about the 'other'.

  • Ignorant...  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 4:24 PM ]

    ...Yeah, thanks.

    Greenley, you are correct.

  • you're still not  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 4:27 PM ]

seeing Felix's side of it- she's not talking about respect. She's arguing a different point.

  • ok fine  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 4:28 PM ]

But it came off completely intolerant. I understand some could think there is a double standard. But I don't think so. I think some individuals or groups of people like to be treated a certain way and just because I don't need to be treated that way doesn't mean I will disregard those wishes.

  • am i on the right track?  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 4:30 PM ]

    here?

  • The way I understand it  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 5:15 PM ]

This is a free country. UNITED States of America. It's not supposed to be separated.

The way I understand it, Native Americans were allowed to keep a small amount of their land with a level of sovereignty. If I were arguing their case my first argument would be their individual demi-nations, also know as reservations, are not states United in America, otherwise there would be more than 50 fucking stars on our flag. Locations within the borders of their reservations are not merely private property they are sovereignties*. And your argument that they wonder off their land and use US resources doesn't hold any weight because our country doesn't allow them to be fully independent and sovereign like any other real nation, so it's what we call a compromise. Therefore it is up to non Native Americans to hold up our end of it and respect their customs which are law. Fuck that was easy.

  • A matter of perspective  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 5:18 PM ]

The land is the Native Americans' home and the Rail Runner and the people on it are their guests. If someone invited you into their home and asked you not to take pictures of it, the polite thing to do is to comply with their wishes.

True about Google Earth though. But Hello... it's all part in parcel with the Patriot Act isn't it? We all should be complaining about that shit.

  • My goodness......  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 5:46 PM ]

I really like what this "kristin" girl has to say. We should meet sometime :) By the way felix, Kristin is saying your point of view is ignorant not that you are.

But I'm disappointed that felix is making a comparison between the Pueblos ASKING people to not take pictures of their sacred land without permission and an occasional Native American driving drunk.

And to assume that the way we view America should be the same way the Pueblos do is ridiculous. Remember, OUR fore-fathers created the United States, THEIR fore-fathers lost wars and were therefore subjected to live within its borders.

Based on the way you feel felix, I would assume you reject any sort of rights of religion. Non-mormons can't just walk into a temple. Is that wrong?

I'm an American and proud of it. I thus have rights. But so does every other person on God's gloriously green earth. And my rights don't involve subjecting other people to my will. Neither do yours.

  • So anyways...  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 6:15 PM ]

I never said Kristin called me ignorant. No one else is taking the time to really understand, even though they say they are. So, thanks. :]

  • Understand?  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 6:24 PM ]

No one else is taking the time to really understand, even though they say they are. So, thanks. :]

I don't really think there is anything to understand. Pueblos don't want pictures taken of their sovereign land. Pretty simple actually.

We don't need to understand, we just need to respect.

And I apologize if it seems like people jumped all over you on this. I just think what you said about it was a bit problematic.

  • No no no.  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 6:27 PM ]

Read what Greenley was trying to understand. I understand they don't want pictures taken. I think it's dumb. Understand where I am coming from. Thanks.

  • You're welcome  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 6:34 PM ]

Go ahead and put me in the category of people who don't understand this:

But, they can drive on our land, drunk. And killing people on OUR land. Hmmm.

I'll be proud to be in that category. Today and tomorrow.

"Go ahead and put me in the category of people who don't understanding this:"

I'm sure you're proud to be "don't" understanding that.

    :] Good night.

    So this is your point

I understand they don't want pictures taken. I think it's dumb.

and that's it, you think it's dumb, thats it?

  • but what about  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 7:41 PM ]

    taking pictures with your mind?

  • I like to take pictures with my ass.  [ Thu Jan 22 2009 11:57 PM ]

It's conveniently located on top of my shoulders.

  • then what about  [ Fri Jan 23 2009 12:55 AM ]

taking pictures of your ass with your mind?

  • When I was in Tangiers, Morocco,  [ Fri Jan 23 2009 6:33 AM ]

I was told I could not take pictures of any of the people because they thought a photograph takes away a little piece of their soul.

However, if you give them say, $5 bucks, you can take as many pictures as you want.

In my closet someplace, I have a whole box full of Moroccan souls. Anybody need one?

  • soul stealing  [ Fri Jan 23 2009 7:34 AM ]

I always suspected there was a $5 angle to it.

  • Wait just a cotton-pickin' minute there pardner.  [ Fri Jan 23 2009 7:56 AM ]

I didn't steal nothin', I bought them souls with hard American currency and they're MINE now. They are kinda thin though with not much substance and most of 'em have holes in 'em. Hey, wait a minute, I think I got took. I want my money back.

  • Yes...  [ Fri Jan 23 2009 8:44 AM ]

I think it's dumb. We don't owe anybody anything. I think I'm done trying to explain things right now. I obviously can't do it thoroughly. I'm sorry. The end.
