Do You Get Naked in the Locker Room?

All the girls in the locker room at my high school maintained a heightened sense of prudishness. We changed in the ugly bathroom stalls, and avoided one another’s eyes in the mirror when combing our hair, etc. Every woman probably knows a few moves for removing a bra without removing the shirt she’s wearing, or how to change shirts without inappropriate skin meeting air.

Like this woman, I was raised in a household conservative about nudity. Everyone wore pajamas, and you certainly didn’t walk around the house in your underpants. Like her, I, too, was surprised by my first visits to the gym. The locker room housed women going about their business without a care for nakedness. But I got over it. She didn’t. Instead, she’s penned a horrified article for Marie Claire, lambasting fat girls especially for not covering up.

What do you think? Beach towels and modest bathroom-stall changing for all? Or, if you don’t want to see it, don’t look, jerk.

When other women get completely undressed in the locker room to get out of their sweaty clothes and hop in the shower. Other naked women only make me uncomfortable when they walk around the locker room like it's a nudist colony. Seriously, what the hell? If you really don't want to put on clean clothes before your hair dries, could you at least wrap a towel around yourself before you pull out the blowdrier? Or damn, I dunno, lay a towel down before you sit on the bench and start muddling through your things?

Incidental nudity is fine. Weird floppy preening is, well, weird. But that's all. I'm not mortally offended, like the author of that article, who seems to think that by acknowledging she doesn't have a perfect body (punctuated with asides about how attracted her husband is to her), she can then rail on chubbier ladies. Tacky.

is my stance. Walking around nude is fine. But I certainly hope those benches get cleaned daily. I wouldn't sit my bare ass on a community bench, that's pretty rude. Where do the clothed people sit? They certainly don't want to sit in someone's crack and genital sweat. And what naked person wants to sit naked in someone else's butt sweat. eeegads.

  • Men's Locker Room  [ Mon Sep 7 2009 2:22 PM ]

That sounds pretty tame compared to what goes on in the men's locker room. Of course, grossness varies upon which locker room we're talking about.

If it's the changing rooms at Ten Thousand Waves then it's dudes taking really long showers and watching you change from start to finish. It's particularly disturbing when that dude was a teacher at Santa Fe prep, or even worse your friend's dad. Santa Fe = Ancient Rome.

If it's a gym dudes are a little more dignified, at least the younger ones. I suspect that when a man is of the age where he needs to take pills to obtain an erection it becomes okay for him to hold off putting on clothing as long as possible. It's also becomes okay for him to blow dry his balls.

    Beat that ladies.

One thing we can all agree on: Shaving in the steam room should be punished by death.

the nakedness is being paraded in front of you. I don't want to be a prude, but I also don't want someone trying to start a conversation with me as they brush their hair while topless is all I'm saying.

Guess you've never seen a woman air out her hairy armpits. Happens more than you'd think. Happens more than I'd like to think.

At least the ass, which begs for ridicule ... especially when four large, over 50 asses stare at you at the spa.
