Win Free Tickets to Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa Tonight at the Sunshine Theater.

Play Youtube Video
Zoot Allures

I’m giving away three pairs of tickets to Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa tonight at the Sunshine. My first Zappa album was Zoot Allures; I found it in the used bins at Natural Sound on Menaul in the late ‘70s. As I listened to it, I was initially disappointed until I heard the title track, which is among his lesser masterpieces.

My brother had lots of Zappa albums and I’ve spent a lifetime trying to assemble the best of what came blasting from his bedroom. As it turned out, there was no one album I could buy; my favorites were scattered across dozens of albums, sometimes planted in the middle of other songs that had nothing to do with them. There are still some I haven’t found, but I’ll know them when I hear them. And, of course, I’ve discovered and re-discovered dozens more favorites during my search.

The first three people to share their own Zappa stories will win a pair of tickets. I guess you’ll have to identify yourself by email to nick@alibi.com so I can get you put on the list at the door.

I was sitting in a restarant called Liberty D's in Norman, OK when I first heard Frank Zappa. I had never heard the music before and this was the day he died. It was the most bizarre music I had ever heard.

(he actually sent me a fleshed-out email version of this story.)

  • My old band  [ Mon Nov 23 2009 1:50 PM ]

One of the first guitarists in a band I started in college was an absolute Zappa nut. Eli, the guitarist, was a really shy, soft spoken kind of character, but his face lit up at the slightest mention of Frank Zappa. To Eli, he was god.

Before Eli agreed to join the band, he had an initiation for us as his future bandmates; we had to listen to Joe's Garage, a "rock opera" of sorts by Zappa which talks about a time when music becomes illegal. It was funny, quirky, strange, different, fascinating, and intriguing, although I don't think anyone will come close to the fanatical reverence of which Eli held Frank Zappa. He did, however, open my eyes and ears to a whole other side of music I wasn't extremely familiar with, and that tends to be worth its weight in gold, coming from a musician.

Wrote a long treatise to lover using the words from 50-50....Zappa always says it!!!

    50-50

    Well, my dandruff is loose

    An' my breath is chartreuse

    I know I ain't cute

    An' my voice is ka-poot

    But that's awright people

I'm just crazy enough to sing to you

    Any old way

I figure the odds be fifty-fifty

I just might have some thing to say

Ain't gonna sing you no love song

How my heart is all sore

    Will not beg your indulgence

    'Cause you heard it before

    An' that's awright people

I'm just crazy enough to sing to you

    Any old way

I figure the odds be fifty-fifty

I just might have some thing to say

    See my prance!

  • now, cwalters won a pair...  [ Mon Nov 23 2009 3:09 PM ]

remember, you have to both post your story here AND email me...

  • ok, MKM wins the third pair  [ Mon Nov 23 2009 4:55 PM ]

with this empassioned plea to my email:

For some odd reason, I can't post comments to the website...

My father was, and still is, an avid fan of Frank Zappa. I heard his music a lot growing up, and remember my favorites being most of The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life, Joe's Garage, and his version of Ravel's Bolero. I still feel nostalgic when I hear Baby Snakes, or the FZ version of Stairway to Heaven.

I'd really love tickets to this show, so I can try to drag my friends with me. I've gotten them into listening to Zappa's music as well. If they can't go, well, I'd love for my dad to see Dweezil performing.

Thank you, and have a great day!

(BTW, MKM would have been the second winner but for the inability to post, which I have now chosen to forgive since the show draws near.)

In high school, the lyrics to "Broken Hearts are For Assholes" was comforting for me. Still is, to a lesser extent. Yeah, real mature, I know, but a lot of his dumber, more disgusting songs still read like poetry to me. He always had a pleasing cadence with his little gross-out monologues.

He did a great Bob Dylan impression in "Flakes," too, maybe the only truly funny one in the entire sordid history of Bob Dylan impressions. And a lot of that "shut up and play yer guitar" stuff is pretty enjoyable, if I'm in the right frame of mind. Great music.

The only Zappa album I actually bought when it came out was "Jazz from Hell," the computer album, which I listened to A LOT. I should track that down.

Anyway, Frank did a lot of things really well. Even when he was irritating, he was still usually interesting.

    How was the show, anyway?

  • Pop culture remembers Frank Zappa, mostly,  [ Tue Nov 24 2009 8:38 PM ]

for poop jokes that Frank didn't laugh at, himself. He was a serious composer challenged with a world that wasn't ready for him. So he made poop jokes.

  • Someday ...  [ Wed Nov 25 2009 1:21 PM ]

... I'd like to sit down with Pop Culture and have a good, long talk about the old days. That would be fun!
