After a five-year run, Nob Hill’s first truly upscale steakhouse went dark last week, according to a member of the owning family. He did go on record that the Gruet winery itself is up 8 percent in sales this year, so there’s no need to stockpile magnums of Champagne (or Pinot Noir ... Gruet’s is excellent, give it a try). Besides the restaurant’s excellent wine, steaks (adieu, petit filet!) and seafood, the wait staff at Gruet Steakhouse was consistently exceptional in a town known for spotty service. I’m very sad to see it go.
RIP, man. And also, I would like to take this opportunity to say that I still miss Kanome.
What's required to be "upscale"? Paul's delivers a marvelous steak every time and was open decades before Gruet. They have your petit filet too.
...but Gruet was pretty darn good. They also have a sashimi appetizer that was killer.
And Paul's is just not the same vibe as Gruet.
But we have Marcello's, Savoy, and Rancher's for the over-the-top experience. And Monte Carlo, Paul's, the Brasserie, and several others for just darn good steaks.
it was absolutely disgusting. Two in our party just left it, couldn't choke it down. worst.
that Gruet didn't even serve prime grade beef; just choice.
I don't even like steak and I know that's ridiculous.
