Trader Joe’s Spicy Hummus Petri Dish

I generally have nothing bad to say about Trader Joe’s Spicy Hummus; I think it’s pretty good. Yesterday, however, when I opened my brand new tub I was met with a shocking bacteriological menagerie. You can see it right there, growing all over the top. It had a freshness date of 1/17/10, so it should have been fine.

The End.

TJ's lets you take anything back. There was a warehouse recall on this item at one time for this reason. Take it back and they'll take care of you.

These things happen, get over it.

I threw it away after photographing it. I fully intend to buy more, believe me. I was skeptical of TJ's at first because I bought some gross stuff. I just had to learn what's good and what's gross. Their Spicy Hummus is definitely the best.

I too have that relationship with trader joes. Don't bother with their Spicy Black Bean soup in the pour box. It's like brown water. Carrot Ginger soup in the pour box also left something to be desired.

My favorite thing about trader joes is their awesome cheese prices. (their prices rock period). Overall there is definitely more good to say about TJs than bad.

I absolutely love TJ's. Their pre-packaged meals and sides are definitely hit or miss, but since we've been doing regular, routine grocery shopping there once every other week, I've found that the food tastes MUCH better than at a comparable grocery store (Wal-Mart, Smith's or Albertsons), and we end up spending quite a bit less. So the "bang for your buck" factor is through the roof.

The employees are also incredible there, because TJ's actually pays them a liveable wage, so they are very friendly and beyond helpful when it's hard to find some random item hidden amongst the tiny aisles and NE Heights yuppies.

I don't typically get crazy with trendy places like this, but I can't say enough good things about TJ's.

  • Chunky Olive Hummus.  [ Sat Feb 6 2010 4:42 PM ]

Not a big fan of olives, but it was actually decent. Also, I love their guacamole in a package. Just squeeze it into a bowl and dip your tortilla chips in...yummy.

the triple-layer hummus. At least it was. Either they changed it, or the blend is different in Maryland. What happened? I swear the first time I bought it, one of the layer's was spicy (jalapeno, maybe?), one was cilantro and one was plain. I could be wrong, though.

I'm a big fan of both their pita chips and their pita crackers.
