Planting the Rainbow Flag at UNM

After almost losing its startup cash, it looks like the Queer Resource Center that students have been fighting for at UNM will be funded after all. According to this article, of the university’s 16 peer institutions, 12 have similar centers. New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M., (population: 95,000) boasts a Sexual and Gender Diversity Resource Center.

The Queer Straight Alliance at UNM is increasing LGBT visibility on campus, by putting together showcases and events. Take in Pat Lohmann’s recap of a recent variety show and bone up on the embattled resource center while you’re at it.

It is about time lgbt folks git their own "center" on Kampus. When I was a student at unm in mid-late 80's we managed to eke out a small office on the upper level of the sub.

It had a phone and nothin' else.

Oh, it had a "listing" in the UNM Resource Book, but then, only a few [maybe dozens] per semester really gave an effen capital letter about it, or were willing to participate. Others, I suppose, were closeted and fearful to "come out" on Campus; even then, UNM observed the National Coming Out day on campus and student union and student government candidates met with various groups.

I am glad to see the acceptance and the visibility of the lgbt groups now on campus.

    Whoopeeeee!!!!!!

  • A straight flag  [ Fri Apr 16 2010 9:56 PM ]

I don't understand this flying of flags for your sexual preference(s). Yes, the (s) because some people are evidently quite proud of that aspect of their duplex lifestyles too. I may be an old hippie but I still don't understand this need to broadcast your sex dealios. Keep it to yourself. It sounds like a need for attention. Are you soooo deprived, of someone to notice you and you're "identity crisis"? I was embarrassed when my parents knew I was sexually active in the 70's. That's old school for sure. Please don't parade before me.

    Heed my advice, please.

    Regards

    Mike

  • Not so much parading...  [ Wed Apr 21 2010 7:46 AM ]

Dear "Pattriot", although I'm not so much an old hippie as a free thinker, I'd like to say this about our "identity crisis": That's not the point. It's a way of raising awareness that we are a significant part of the population - so much so that it might surprise you that one of your better friends is gay. Some day our numbers will be evident enough, so that flying a flag or having an annual "coming out" day won't be necessary or even worth a second thought.

  • The creator of the LGBT flag: in his own words  [ Wed Apr 21 2010 11:13 AM ]

The Alibi interviewed Gilbert Baker, the guy who designed the first rainbow pride flag back in 1978, when he came through town last summer. Interviewer Marisa Demarco posed a question along similar lines as Pattriot:

Why does the gay community need a flag?

Because visibility is important. Visibility is still our No. 1 job, as a matter of fact. The rainbow flag helps in that matter. Certainly, it's incredible, the way people have interpreted it and used it. That visibility is important because it puts our message out. People see a rainbow flag and they know it's gay, even if they're not gay. That's due to our great work.

It's important that we claim power, and part of that is not being invisible. The rainbow flag, you put it up on your house or you put it on your bumper sticker or you put it on your T-shirt, you're taking direct action. You're saying something as an action.

He had some interesting history and viewpoints on the subject. Read it all, in Baker's own words, here.

  • Vegetarian lifestyle  [ Thu Apr 22 2010 12:09 PM ]

My self-identity is a vegetarian and that is my lifestyle. I don't normally run around telling eveyone my personal secret. I don't feel a need for "visibility", "getting the message out", "claiming power" or "taking action". It is a private matter. No flag building is necessary. I asked a gay couple whom I have known for over twenty years (thay have been together for twenty eight years) their thoughts on this matter and they share my distaste for in your face activism and the shrill way it is expressed.

BTW Vegan activists can be embarrassing too.

  • So you would prefer  [ Thu Apr 22 2010 12:22 PM ]

if people kept quiet about most things.

  • But, Pat  [ Thu Apr 22 2010 12:47 PM ]

Have you been afraid for your physical safety because you're a vegetarian? Have you been denied the right to marry another vegetarian? Did your parents disown you because you were born a vegetarian? Did you suffer negative career consequences once it came out you didn't eat meat?

I'm afraid you confuse the issue by equating an innocuous lifestyle choice with a group of people fighting for its right to be treated fairly under the law and within society. A flag isn't about shoving beliefs in anyone's face: it's a symbol that unites those who believe these acts of discrimination are abhorrent. What about that upsets you?

  • Hell yeah, Darcy.  [ Thu Apr 22 2010 1:10 PM ]

    Sing it.

  • wavin' his banner all over the place,  [ Fri Apr 23 2010 7:26 PM ]

We will, we will rock you!!

I wonder how many microscopes or Educational Assistants this monument would fund. Couldn't help but notice that budgets are tight and UNM has never been the paragon of efficient spending. The beat goes on. But if even one single boy had his self esteem elevated by the sight of his flag, on a major campus, it's worth every dime, right?

I'm not going to poke, prod or demand another entitlement from the taxpayers in the way of a Vegetarian Resource Center. I won't spend years making my dream happen. If I did however, impose my views, read Factory Farms, and shove my opinions onto others through aggressive activism, then I would expect some push-back. If I tied up traffic with a stupid parade and inconvenienced thousands of other citizens, I would not expect a positive feedback.

It's just sex folks. It's a private matter. Keep your privates out of my face.

    Regards

  • Darcy  [ Fri Apr 23 2010 10:00 PM ]

Sorry, I jumped over your post, didn't see it.

I empathize with your travails and I support you in all your challenges.

I support Gay marriage; you can be every bit as miserable as I am. I never condone violence, just don't bring it down on yourself. If your parents disowned you, that's a matter too deep for me.

    Regards

    Mike

  • Thanks, Mike the Pattriot, but...  [ Sat Apr 24 2010 11:19 AM ]

who said I was gay? Maybe I am. But maybe I'm also a heterosexual who's made uncomfortable by homophobia. I hear they exist.

And I'd like for you to explain what you mean by

I never condone violence, just don't bring it down on yourself.

I'm sincerely hoping that you don't mean that someone being gay or, god forbid, "acting gay" is a reason for violence.

  • I don't condone violins either...  [ Sat Apr 24 2010 10:21 PM ]

    Darcy

If I'm at the bar with a gay acquaintance and someone picks on her/him, they get to go through me first. Sounds like braggadocio, but it's really not. I'm a loyal guy.

BTW, the wife says I'm "acting gay" all the time (your quote). I think it's a pejorative though. I preen too much with the hair and tying the tie just right, color coordinated shirt to slacks... My defense is you have to look professional to customers.

Homophobia is a mistaken term and I think it was invented/designated by the activists, whom I don't care for, obviously. Phobia is Latin for "fear", so I'm told. Who the hell is afraid of gay people??? I'm genuinely afraid of besotted linebackers, myself.

    Regards

    Mike

PS Don't bring violence down on yourself 101; Medieval style:

Don't poison the Village well from spite

Don't hex thy opponent with witchcraft

    Don't gore the neighbor's oxen
