Las Conchas fire update: Cochiti evacuation, boycott fireworks, pet haven

Cochiti is prepping for a mandatory evacuation. Los Alamos was evacuated this afternoon.

A Facebook event is circulating that invites people to “boycott fireworks of any kind this year in New Mexico!” The guest list has grown exponentially throughout the day. As of right now, almost 6,000 people are attending and about 400 are not.

The Española Valley Humane Society is taking in animal evacuees from the fire. From the news release:

We are accepting dogs, cats and caged pets from evacuees and serving as a staging location for poultry, horses, donkeys, goats and sheep in small numbers. If you or someone you know is evacuating, please have them call us, so we can give them important information about the evacuation process for pets. Call 505-753-8662 or 470-1278.

Donations of cash, dry food, non-clumping cat litter, paper bowls, crates, cat litter boxes and towels are appreciated. The shelter is seeking people who may be able to temporarily house an animal. If you’re willing, send an email to EVHSNina@gmail.com.

Updates from the shelter are also available on Facebook.

  • we lost our house in the cerro grande fire.  [ Mon Jun 27 2011 7:14 PM ]

My dad's prediction is that Los Alamos won't get taken down by this one because of the natural fire break Cerro created. Some areas - Barranca Mesa and North Mesa (Horse Mesa, as we called it) - might be at risk from the deep untouched canyons surrounding them. The Cerro Grande fire wiped out electricity to Los Alamos so they could no longer pump water. He says that isn't an issue this time. Keep your fingers crossed.

  • Snakes and sparklers... OF DOOM!  [ Tue Jun 28 2011 9:02 PM ]

I'm sure that I'm not the only person who feels that fireworks tents peppered throughout a state full of incendiary landscape is quite sad and ironic. Each likely offers a wide selection of flammable contraband. And even the most cautious among us can birth a disaster with a "harmless" sparkler. I grew up in the very mountains that are currently scorching before us, and believe me, it's not just idiots and drunk teenagers who start forest fires; FIRE starts forest fires. It is unpredictable, and it is more powerful than you. It goes where it wants, and it's always hungry. New Mexico is parched, friends. I realize that YOU (yes, you) aren't listening because can't hear me over your own assumed carefulness, but believe me, that thing that you're lighting on fire, whether or not it's "legal", will find a way. Starve the beast, people. DON'T buy fireworks this year.
