Thousands of websites to protest SOPA tomorrow

The good kind of sopa. Let us not allow this other suspect SOPA to tarnish its good name.
The good kind of sopa. Let us not allow this other suspect SOPA to tarnish its good name.

You’ve probably heard that Wikipedia, Reddit, Boing Boing, Mozilla, TwitPic, WordPress and others will go dark tomorrow. Politico estimates about 7,000 sites will participate in the blackout.

Google will put a button on its homepage directing users to information about Stop Online Piracy Act, the bill these Internet giants are protesting.

The BBC broke down the controversy for us.

Here’s an explanation of how SOPA and its Senate twin PIPA could affect you.

Looks like I actually have to do work tomorrow instead of goofing off on the internet all day.

  • New Mexico on the wall of shame  [ Tue Jan 17 2012 6:06 PM ]

Our own Lujan and Udall are not merely supporting these two bills, but are cosponsors. We New Mexicans are going to bear an extra share of responsibility for this mess.

Udall's job is safe for a few more years, but Lujan has a competitor for his party's nomination, partly because of this ridiculous bill, though without the money. Northern New Mexicans (NM-3, sorry Burquenos) are going to have to back Closson quickly if they don't want to have to vote for a Republican in November.

  • Bingaman disappointing on censorship issue  [ Wed Jan 18 2012 12:21 PM ]

I was disheartened when I called Sen. Bingaman's office to protest the Protect IP Act (PIPA). This act, if passed into law, would allow the government to force foreign websites off the internet - they would be able to block those sites from access in the USA. The claim is that they would only do that to protect US film makers and recording artists - but the act would not stop there.

The thought that our government would copy China - a communist country - in restricting access to foreign websites is chilling. And the fact that a Democrat Senator supports this measure is disturbing.

Clearly, the payments from the film and recording industries to our legislatures have bought them off; while they can't get together on the economy or unemployment, apparently both sides are willing to unite against freedom of information.

It's just as well Bingaman is not running for reelection - I could not vote for someone willing to restrict the freedoms of Americans.

  • Voting? Yeah, that's been working well.  [ Wed Jan 18 2012 2:19 PM ]

We can easily assume our incumbents will be re-elected. We should be fund raising for some good ol' American bribes. Clearly that's what it takes to get legislation on or off the table. Lessee... TV/Music/Movies was the 8th largest industry contributing to Udall's campaign, so if we can all pitch in about $200,000 to buy his vote back we can see some real democracy!
