CommentsRe: Legislature 2010: Race talk boils in the House
Representative Ben Rodefer supported the act [ Tue Feb 23 2010 1:10 PM ]
Listing me under "opposition" is wrong and misleading. I voted for the Hispanic Education Act. My discussion on the floor was simply to point out that if 56% of the students the PED (Public Education Department) serves are Hispanic, then why hasn't the PED already taken steps to address the huge discrepancies in graduation and testing numbers? The Act only creates an office of one person, and that is someone already on staff, so just a new title. If this is really a significant problem, which I absolutely believe it is, then we need to put much greater resources towards solving it than just one single staff person. My floor comments were out of frustration that we have not been already working on this for years and that we now think some fancy "Act" and one staff person are going to fix the problem? -Representative Benjamin Rodefer |
