Origin of the word tardy. [ Sat Jun 16 2007 1:01 PM ]
This word has nothing to do with the word "retarded", except for the common latin root: tard(us)--slow. It has been around since 1475, according to Webster's, whereas the word "retarded" for developmentally disabled individuals had only been around since the 1800s.
I don't think that when they rang the "tardy bell" or gave us "tardy slips" in elementary school (maybe they stopped using that word awhile back?) that they were referring to our IQ!
