well, i gues we know now that homelessness is not brain science, peope are homeless because there is a lack of housing.
3,000 ( many think around 5,000) and a total of just over 300 total beds avalable.
housing first is a great model for housing, if only we could expand it to the the largest %, of those experenceing homelessness and poverty , and not just target the program from a public safety program and address ity from a public health program and safety will be one of the out comes.
we know now through studies, that housing First alone is not as effective with out partner programs that fully fund and support a strong emergency Sheltter program.
Housing first alone cna not build enogh housing needed to address the support of manny who become homeless now.
Dimestic violance, Kids comming out of foster care, jail, lack of rent support, Nusance abatement Laws,..evictions, and all the other reasons why people loose there housing.
those experenceing emergencecy, loss of housing need aplace to stay , now not later, a few day,s in cold weather is a hardship enogh, let alone weeks or months to access housing.
how will we address the houseing, housing , when we have 100;s or more already waiting for low income housing throught HUD>
what about those with Disabilities, comming out of nurseing homes, by Fed. and state mandated Homestead Laws.
Vetearns comming home suffering PTSD, and other challenges, and we still have not done out best outreach to our Veatenam era, vetearns.....Emergency shelters, can not be underfundered, less we have more homeless on the streets.
after 13 years serving and as a consumer, we are seeing what those in the services area or those experenceing homelessness, 3nd generation homeless, ( Mother, child, and now grand child)
NIMBYism, whre will it be ok to build new low income rentail units.
do we move low income peope back into already depress neborhoods?.. leading many back into area's that were un mangeable then.
can we slow, the closeing of low incom hotels, and apartments
( throwing the baby out with the bath water in the name of public safety)
permant housing is the goal; but like any project we need a well thought out steps that get us there.
and stop cerry picking how we get there, stop cerry, picking who we help, and get about the buss., of building partnerships, with every goverment, bussiness, developers, and community.
we either pay a living wage, to support housing or we work and support a fully funded supportive housing programs ( Sec. 8 ,Public housing) or a combenatetionm of both.
