I have always felt that many of the homeless have various levels of either diagnosed and untreated or undiagnosed mental illness. Our health system has failed these people in the worst way. I am now realizing by this article and other sources that a larger and larger fraction of homeless people are victims of uncontrollable life events and, as Marisa Demarco points out, the huge discrepancy between wages and the cost of housing here in Albuquerque. I'm sure that there are many of us out here, who care deeply and who would like to help these people. "There, but for the grace of God go we". At times we realize that we could be thus challenged at any time. I for one would like to know how I can find a way to help this situation beyond giving donations to shelters.
