Scarantino and his allies at the Scaife-funded ultra-right neo-conservative Rio Grande Foundation have been railing against (no pun intended) the introduction of light rail into the city since it was seriously considered. One would think that other cities of Albuquerque's size never successfully implemented light rail or made it an economic success. The fact of the matter is that all one needs to do is actually do research, which, Mr. Scarantino apparently cannot do since it goes against his pre-conceived knee-jerk polemics, to see that such as system is not only necessary if Albuquerque is to improve its quality of life, provide more alternatives for public transit and seriously invest in infrastructure to encourage a diverse economic base but there are many successful examples that can be emulated. Of course, to neo-conservative polemicists their toxic ideology must destroy all aspects of effective democratic self-government.
