Pocahontas on Ayahuasca [ Mon Jan 25 2010 10:06 AM ]
Movie had lots of problems... but as a spectacle, the biggest grossing moving EVER has global cultural relevance regardless of the big DORKiNESS. I admire the attempt to discuss some planetary issues despite the stoopid colonialist romanticization of the NATIVES. I love the 3d day-glo, blacklight jellyfish floral & fauna. Nothing wrong with a half second of alien sex either. Mostly I agree with Erik Davis: [link]

Most community gardens in NYC were basically squatted, people reclaiming land that capitalism had left vacant, fenced off and defiled. Street people and junkies still used them as homes, but they were also often recruited to help with gardening chores. Condos are always more economically profitable. The last 20 years saw many bitter fights and losses in my old neighborhood, the East Village and LES, where community gardens gave way to dollar-tranced developers. In one egregiously ironic example on Ave B & 7th Street, big artful photographs of the now-displaced street people and the now-destroyed gardens line the new, upscale lobby. Albuquerque is just ugly. The two biggest reasons, in my view are, are cinder blocks and car-based architecture ('carchitecture'). Makes for ugly places: parking lots and cheap construction. Strip malls. I think moving towards human-sized, community-scale development is the only real way to spark some beauty and inspiration. I don't mind big buildings. They can be amazingly beautiful if the intention and quality and thoughtfulness of construction is detailed and brought out... Oddly, I kind of like that big bank building on Central & San Mateo. Cracks me up. For me, the thing about Albuquerque is that its defects are its virtues. Its humility and ugliness reverberate a unique, resounding sweetness. Last edited [1/19/10 2:20 PM] |
