Singing the Chorale's Praises

By August March [ Sat Dec 21 2013 4:00 PM ]

I’m convinced choral music and Christmas go together. Maybe it’s the caroling connection. I’ve actually never seen carolers here in Burque, but it was very popular in the part of England where I once dwelt. If you don’t yet share this conviction, experiment at Santa Fe Desert Chorale's traditional concert of holiday offerings. While they have a full schedule of performances up en El Norte, they’ll only be in Burque for one recital of Carols and Lullabies at Immanuel Presbyterian Church (114 Carlisle SE) tomorrow, starting at 4pm. The premiere vocal ensemble in these parts, the Chorale has a reputation for producing seamlessly beautiful renditions of sacred and secular choral works. Besides holiday favorites like “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” this concert includes deeper cuts by Rachmaninoff and, perhaps most significantly, will contribute to the latest concert hall programming trend by featuring a work by an American composer: Morten Lauridsen’s weighty yet popular “O Magnum Mysterium.” I would venture a guess the event is worth the price of admissionwhich ranges from 15 to 40 bonesfor Lauridsen’s piece alone; his work is an intense, sublime sonic experience, and this postmodern meditation on Gregorian chant serves as a potent symbol of the holidays ahead.
