Circus Swing: Zoltan Orkestar at Zinc

If you’ve never had the opportunity to check out Zoltan Orkestar, head to Zinc Wine Bar & Bistro (3009 Central NE) tomorrow night for an experience that will leave you provocatively pleased and sonically sated. A band that continues to defy convention and genre norms with their terribly cool combination of twang, swing, jazz and polka nuanced by eastern European conceits, Zoltan Orkestar is one helluva listenable, danceable musical experience. Boasting the amazing middle-America vocalizations of Glynda Szekely, the burningly bright guitar stylings of Zoltan Szekely, John Keith’s hauntingly huge accordion playing and the upright bass bravado of local jazzman Michael Grimes, this band is well worth your time and attention. Maybe Zoltan will even bust out his “Zoltanator,” an odd musical instrument that combines guitar, ukulele, bicycle horn and xylophone. Their sometimes-cryptic tuneage, featuring titles like “Esquimeaux the Clown” and “Aardvark Jive,” will leave you wondering why Hungary isn’t the music capital of the world; the Szekely family could be firmly in charge of that Baltic state. This 21-plus concert starts at 9:30pm. There's no cover charge, so buy yourself a double to celebrate. Zinc Wine Bar & Bistro • Thu Jan 8 • 9:30pm • FREE • 21+ • View on Alibi calendar
