Inside the Outer Limits: Periphery at Sunshine Theater
If you like your metal with intricate instrumental passages, a knowing and nuanced narrative, a brutal rhythm section and vocals straight from the deepest levels of Hades itself, then check out Periphery at the Sunshine Theater (120 Central SW) tomorrow night. They’ll be at the storied Downtown venue as part of their Juggernaut Tour. The band’s meticulous work is a deft combination of prog-rock conceits, heavy metal aesthetics and youthful energy, bound up in a sonic package that's disturbing and highly listenable. With three guitarists added to the plutonium-based, radioactive mix, Periphery delivers a sound and experience that should be an essential component of any local headbanger’s bucket list.
Band members include Spencer Sotelo (vocals), guitarists Misha Mansoor, Jake Bowen and Mark Holcomb, as well as drummer Matt Halpern and bassist Adam Getgood. Halpern was recently featured on the cover of Modern Drummer, indicating the serious level of playing undertaken by this metallic sextet. Nothing More, Wovenwar and New Jersey prog-rockers Thank You Scientist open. Tickets for this all-ages excursion along the river Styx will cost you 17 bones, but you’ll be howling about the majesty of it all for years afterward. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the show is at 7pm.
