Be Pussy Riot!

Have you also been following the exploits of founding Pussy Riot member Nadezhda (Nadya) Tolokonnikova since her involvement in provocative Russian street-art group Voina? If you're an SFUAD student, you're entitled to a free ticket to a conversation with Tolokonnikova and Maria (Masha) Alyokhina, both of whom were imprisoned for over a year on charges of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. (They performed a "punk prayer" in a Russian church.) Happening on Thursday, May 7, at 6pm, the conversation, facilitated by AdobeAirstream publisher Ellen Berkovitch and translator Pyotr Verzilov, will be hosted at Greer Garson Theater (1600 St. Michaels Dr., Santa Fe).

The appearance precedes a fundraising dinner, where a $300 donation nets you a course of rosemary-grilled sturgeon; for $600, you can sit at Nadya and Masha's table. When the event's $35 tickets rapidly sold out, local Pussy Riot fans made their displeasure known on social media; while I understand fans' disappointment, the idea that die-hard supporters of Russian feminist activists and prisoner's advocates would kvetch about a sold-out event is a little disheartening. As Nadya and Masha advised in their first English-language speech, “Anyone can be Pussy Riot!” So what are you waiting for?
