The Chirp of the Cicada
Chicharra at Sister
I'm still searching for it, still waiting for the sounds of three basslines to invade my ears, the harmonics of three powerful voices coming together in complete unity to dismantle any preconceived notions you have about good rock 'n' roll. This is me waiting for the sounds of Chicharra. Comprised of Mauro Woody, Monica Demarco, Marisa Demarco (all three ladies singing and playing bass), John Butler and Henry Hutchinson, the band is playing a show at Sister (407 Central NW) on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
I first caught sight of the band at Burt's Tiki Lounge after seeing Sleater-Kinney at the Sunshine Theater. It was a loud, raucous and transcendental end to the evening, with these three powerful women tearing up the stage and wailing away on bass. Absolutely incredible. This is a group you might want to keep an eye on. I see bright things in their future. The band bills itself as “insect glam metal,” and if you're interested in finding out what that is, just be there by 8pm, and take $5 with you. Circuit Des Yeux and Marisa Anderson open.
